With such higher spends from stay over visitors vs cruise ship visitors, we'd be better off as a nation and a region simply kicking out all the cruise ships and thus restoring tourism to a land based product only (as it largely was in the past).
What is to stop the EU or OECD or some other group with no elected authority over the Bahamas from issuing new demands in the future even if we comply with these demands?
No one has ever once refuted the logic of how buckling to external demands ever works in the long run!
Why are we building new fossil fuel infrastructure when everything indicates we must as a planet start to get off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible?
If we do move ahead with LNG, will we at least be honest as Trump has been and pull out of the Paris accord? (as clearly the Bahamas can never meet its comittments with a new 20 year LNG deal)
Lighthouse Beach should have been made a national park decades ago! It was only a matter of time before the private owners put it up for sale, we are just lucky they let people on it as long as they did. The government must pony up to buy it, no ifs, ands or buts about it, and the people must tell their MPs they WILL pay more in terms of limited duration levie/VAT surcharge that goes straight to a BNT managed fund with fully open books to finance the purchase.
Solar is cheaper than LNG now, and will not further climate change, and will not indebt the Bahamas, wreck our foregin exchange balances or risk environmental disaster if an accident were to occur. LNG would wipe out everything for 2-3 miles probably in the event of an accident. But the sun is free, so that means no money for its end "supplier", no corporate structures to enrich so this is all probably too dreamy to think we'd ever "cut the cord" to our fossil fuel overlords.
But hey, maybe they will find gas in the Bahamas, and we can pay to buy it (back from overseas processors), liquify it, and pay to ship it (back), instead of just tapping the sun!
PS - St. Eustasias in the Dutch Caribbean is now 100% solar! (which was the way to go rather than rebuild from storm damage)
The country can't afford to rebuild small islands with very small populations anymore. We do not have the money pure and simple. Offer free resettlement support. Its not in the national interest. Also its an opportunity to create new national reserves to replenish our very badly depleted conch. The conch need space to rebuild!
Perhaps the EU should spell out what action it will take against those outside its bloc that don't adhere to its standards on privacy and the environment. Oh, but that would mean having to sanction the US and China....
What guarantees would the Bahamas have it wouldn't just be given new demands in future even if it met all the current demands now? This is the illogic of complying with such demands, its essentially asking for your soverignty.

Agreed Clamshell. It must be made into a National Park, and should have been ages ago. And also Dean's Blue Hole in Long Island!
On Lighthouse Point must be saved as national park

Cheaper if caricom just kicked out the cruise ship industry. Then the Caribbean could start making enough money off tourism to be a-okay.
