Get back to creating a superior academic school for the top students to compete for entry. (Like the old Govt High). We need only one for the island or maybe the country. Offer a comprehensive education school, including a BTVI style for the majority of others; introduce a proper Apprentice System for practical learning, ensuring a certificate for success at each stage. (Can be modelled after the British system). The students can decide how to spend their time and efforts, and be too busy to cause disruption in school! The country will benefit by having properly trained technicians to hire for service. At the moment, anyone who has a hammer styles himself/herself as a carpenter!
We have not yet learned our lessons! The old curriculum ain't working! Revamp the way we teach and learn...some excellent books out there to inform discussions. Only a fool keeps doing the same things and expecting different results. Here is a news flash...do we need to be teaching to pass BGCSE? Or educating the students?
The UB should be thinking out of the box for immediate solutions to this problem. Forget the old maxims and create new ones! Weekend and night classes and online programs offered to potential teachers to gain required credentials is one way to get younger teachers in the classroom quickly but completion should not take forever. People are turned off facing an endless length of red tape. They want to commit to the shortest possible time and get on with the job while receiving respect for their talent, knowledge and skills. I agree the older retired teachers should be used as a last resort.
Problem relates to the attitude that the people have: government " owes" them the money so if they get anything, they don't have to pay it back. The people have become used to handouts...look at the social services system! They live beyond their means and line up at the end of the month, dressed to the nines, complete with fancy handbags, jewellery and manicures, for handouts. No interest in finding any job (Chile, das Haitian work!). About time we start insisting on facing responsibility.
What is going on in this country? I am losing confidence and beginning to look at getting out myself. Certainly not encouraging young people to come home. Heartbreaking!
Time for FNM leaders to regroup for consultations amongst themselves. The honeymoon is definitely over. Strategic planning needed and defined programming put in place. Where is the number one focus? Work on it together and get it done! The people want real change now. Hold ministers accountable for their areas but work together on the most needed of the list. Even small successes would make the people happy...
