If we don't change these laws, we will suffer the consequences. Please Bahamians, wake up and stop being so passive. We will be overran in no time, and by people who do not necessarily add value to our society. For the most part they are takers! They take advantage of everything we are supposed to be offering to the Bahamian citizenry. It's not right!
I agree with Mr. Symonette. It's time to revisit the laws. Children born to illegal immigrants should in **NO** way be entitled to citizenship. That's the way its done all over Europe. The United States and Canada are among the last two countries in the world that grant citizenship automatically and we see the dilemma that they are now faced with. If I, as a Bahamian, was to go to a country in the European Union illegally and decide to have a child, my child will NOT be entitled to citizenship. That is the way it should be in the Bahamas as well.
I do support citizenship for legal immigrants, they can apply at the age of 18. I also believe that if the child has one Bahamian parent and can prove the parentage via DNA, then, they should be entitled to automatic citizenship. We need to control our citizenship! You do not want to be taken over by another country's citizenry who may not share the same values as ours.
@BahamasforBahamians, come on man! You may not agree with his politics or the way he is managing the country, but to call the PM that word that you used is really disrespectful and in poor taste. I am sure you could have chosen a better word to describe him.
It's a scare tactic! They are playing on the government's financial crisis. I believe Sunwing is owned in part by the guy who was trying to buy the hotel from the Chinese but failed to negotiate a sale. He then tried to work some deal with the government, but PM Minnis told him to **"put the deal where the sun didn't shine"** . Now he is pulling Sunwing out of the GB market. Oh well!..... let's just hope that there is something greater in store for Grand Bahama. They are really hurting.
Am I the only one that read those positive remarks in this article? Did you commentators read the same article that I did? In case you didn't, there was some fairly good news in that article.
**"With the revised national accounts data suggesting The Bahamas has a $10-$11bn economy, the IMF's estimates effectively slash economic growth by $20-$22m this year and $10-$11m for 2019. This, though, does not alter the Fund's prediction that this country will enjoy the most rapid GDP expansion it has seen for a decade over these two years."**
KP Turnquest and team, **stay focused**, slowly we will return to fiscal responsibility. It is very unfortunate that many Bahamians still do not get what you are trying to accomplish. I wish you all the very best because we have been floating on a sinking ship for far too long. A financially stable Bahamas is best for all of us, doesn't matter your party politics.
I take issue with the headline: **Taranique - Victim Of Outdated Laws: Us Congresswoman Calls On Bahamas And Caricom To Modernise.**
no, no, no, Taranque is a victim of **irresponsible parenting and illegal immigration!** While, I sympathize with this young lady's situation, her parents and grandparents are at fault. Her grandparents for entering this sovereign nation illegally and having her mother; and her mother, knowing her situation and statelessness, having her. They placed themselves in this situation.
I take issue with this Congresswoman! Please do not tell us what we should do. We are a sovereign nation! You are only looking to appease Taranique's US family who I am sure are your constituents, otherwise you would have never gotten involved!
The US and Canada are among the last in the world to confer automatic citizenship on people born in those countries to non citizens. The rest of the world, especially Europe has smartened up because they are practically being overran by illegal migrants who are spitting out children faster than they can count.
The Bahamas is a small nation, if we were to allow every Tom, Dick and Harry to enter our country and automatically confer citizenship on them, we would no longer be able to manage ourselves.
@rawbahamian, that's a great question! Why do people continue to have children when they are clearly unable to afford them? When former MP Richard Lightbourne scolded Bahamian women for that practice, most took offense. He was correct....... if you can't afford to take care of yourself or your children then you really should not have them.
