Uuuummmm ....Didnt somebody try this by creating "freeport"
If I recall rightly as soon as it started to become the biggest (legitimate economic) boom this country has ever seen, some of them people went and bent it and broke it !!! And now they going to reinvent it all over again ???
A few weeks ago an American tourist was caught entering the country with over 5 grams of high grade medical marijuana that she had bought with a prescription in California. A Bahamian Judge tried to convince her that marijuana was a dangerous substance and after she disagreed he let her go, to enjoy the rest of her vacation here. I also know a young Bahamian that can never (ever) travel to the USA because a Bahamian judge charged him with possession of a dangerous substance (half a lousy joint) So you see the backwardness only applies to some and we all continue to let it roll.
On one hand they are pulling the trigger on ascension to the WTO and on the other hand they are talking about Price Control. WTO means dropping duty on ALL food and going to a globally competitive capitalist market place and Price Control is something that backward authoritarian communists do (badly). C'mon FNM. Stop trying to please every damn individual in the country and focus. Instead of pandering to some ill-conceived and outdated legislation, raise the working class up so they can afford to pay for an $8 head of cauliflower at Fresh Market !
There has never been so many unnecessary work permits and permanent residency (with the right to own your own business) get approved as when the PLP were just in. Nothing to do with protecting the fish fry and everything to do with people getting grease. Forget it if you a modern day Bahamian company that needs to bring in a special set of skills......for a couple dollars your PLP was letting people on permits set up business and bring in their own people on permits and the next set on permits bringing their buddies in on permits. And Permanent residency with the right to own your own fish fry was on sale !!!
Where is your boy Perry by the way ? I see you all waving his flag but cant see him for ghost !
The banks don't give two hoots about anything but making their shareholders a bunch of profits, recession or not. Franklin, Commonwealth, your local loan manager, they aren't going to give up their healthy lifestyle so you can catch a break. Why nobody ever talks about drastically lowering the prime rate in this country to alleviate the problem is the most disgusting thing. The politicians keep the central bank prime rate high so that they can keep borrowing money for themselves to spend (steal) and the hard working homeowners are left with the highest interest rates and the highest unemployment rates. Is just one more way your leaders are smiling at you while screwing you
Everything that has been tried in my lifetime to stamp out rampant corruption in customs has failed. Mass firing, retraining, computerization, relocation. Hopefully one day the boss will realize that a simple system with one moderate, socially acceptable, standard rate for everything would wipe out 90% of the opportunities to twist and turn within the system. Good lord knows we could do without 10 different rates of duty on various parts of chicken ana ana lumber is duty free but nails are 45% ?????? I bet an actuarian's salary for a year that a flat rate of 12.5% import duty on everything across the board would double the governments income with half the customs staff to manage it
Unfortunately like most of Fidel's communist ideology, charging a 20% exchange rate does nothing to help. Changing your money to US$ still costs 20% more and therefore imports still cost 20% more. And unless you are an oppressive dictator, the black market would take over the exchange of all currency and avoid the abnormal economics of it all
If the gaming boards total budget for payroll was roughly a million a year and these few people were getting $800,000 of it ? Sure did pay to be a PLP crony versus every other poor sucker thinking they getting a decent cut of the pie
If the gaming boards total budget for payroll was roughly a million a year and these few people were getting upwards of $800,000 of it ? Sure did pay to be a PLP crony versus every other poor sucker thinking they getting a decent cut of the pie
Idiots saying things and trying to change the rules based on foolish emotions and ignorant entitlement. Any fool could see that the recent regulations would cause a backlash. The average foreign fly-fisherman is a wealthy independent professional or businessman and these Bahamian resort owners think they can push them around by getting some stupid lawyers involved ?? Next thing they'll be asking for jail-time ....
