This tariff is economically survivable for the Bahamas. Some GB jobs in the petroleum refining business on Grand Bahama will be lost, the crawfishermen on Long Island and Spanish Wells may take a hit, but since so many were/are supporters of You Know Who then I ain't checking for them anyways. The real danger may be in the soon to be released list of 43 countries which will have US travel restrictions. Obviously Haiti and DR will on it, and if The Bahamas then too then we are in serious trouble.
At last we know the cost of being an adulterous wife who does not use birth control...many married Bahamians have probably wondered about this for years and years. $21,600....LOL.
And now we wait and see. If Mr. Lewis is appointed to some high paying position in State Owned Enterprise within the next year or so, maybe just after the election, then it might engender speculation that deal was made to split the vote in his constituency allowing for the election of the PLP candidate. Remember that each sitting member of the HOA has $100,000 of our tax money to spend each year in their constituency, that amount can influence many favourable votes. Time will tell as always. Sigh....
So, aeamadam, you write: "Eighty some million people can't be that stupid.". And I must ask you; how many people do you think voted for the corporal with the little mustache in 1934? Just so, more than half of the eligible voters of that country. Stupidity is not a comforting metric to assess anything by.
OK, As a nominally responsible Bahamian citizen I must confess that I have avoided for decades my civil duty to serve on a trial jury. The reasons are as follows; 1)the payment for serving is nothing short of an insult, 2) the judiciary system is historically corrupt, 3) If if found and I later meet the convicted out on bail for am appeal of his sentence then I be dead. 3) the meals are just awful, 4) my business would fail if I was absent for a 10 week trial, 5) The gubmint really don't care 'cos a defense lawyer who made millions of dollars off the system as it is, in now in charge, and he sure has no incentive to change anything; particularly as he will never be called to serve on Jury Duty.....
Why not have 73 new public holidays; one for each of the PLP's elected with a declaration of owning less than $100,000 but left office owning several millions of dollars?
When the decision was made that the SOE BEC should sell their product at a price that was less than it cost the corporation to produce we should never forget that PLP Perry Christie was not only Prime Minister but also the Minister of Finance. It would be foolish to believe that this ill-advised decision can be laid at the feet of any other individual. Just another piece of stupidity in a lifetime of the same. Anyway, at least now he has the job of fixing the problems in Haiti so that will be sorted in short order.........not.
