If, and thank goodness that I am not, I was in the unenviable position of being the Prime Minister of this the perhaps smallest, least consequential, of the English Commonwealth countries, then my first and most important concern would be to get elected to a 2nd term as PM as only then do you qualify for the huge pension enjoyed by two term holders of the office, or the surviving spouse of the deceased holder. The amount of our tax money paid out to certain people due to this is enormous and would shock those trying to survive on a paltry $15,000 per month.....Sigh.

This is kind of sad, is this just another person who makes his money from the gambling business trying to buy respectability? Maybe to be appointed as a Bahamian ambassador somewhere that is not very important? Have we not seen this story played out before. It usually takes at least two generations, sometimes three, to elevate a family's dignity from persona non grata to acceptable in any particular social structure. Think the USA's rum running Kennedy for example. Joe Kennedy appointed US ambassador to Gt. Britain in 1940, or thereabouts.

The letter writer asserts that; "Pindling was man enough to do it.". I beg to differ. Pindling had millions of dollars in his bank account that he claimed that he did not know where that money came from. IMO he only called the Royal Commission of Inquiry because of the pressure exerted by the USA & the UK. Who can forget the fear of one infamous cabinet minister too scared to leave Nassau in a boat in case the USA's DEA might arrest him. Perhaps you had to have been there and lived through those interesting times. Have such times come again? I don't know. yet.....

Twenty two million dollars each year, .
We’re taxed to keep them in the air. .

Such malfesance should be a crime. .

No Bahamian could have created Atlantis, Bahmar, Alnany, Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay, or a viable tourist attraction on Colonial Beach. Perhaps fLyingfish would prefer if the country had none of these existed and all the thousands of workers employed there were instead employed by the government getting paid by our taxes and borrowed money?

hrysippus says...

This is good news for the prospective employees. What has happened to the Bahamian entrepreneur who was so vocal in proclaiming what some considered to be overly grandiose plans? He was granted a lease of some Crown Land on Paradise Island but nothing seems to have happened, has he even paid the government the fees due on his lease?

hrysippus says...

I cannot agree with those who say that every Bahamian politician is corrupt and self-serving; not all of them . Over the past decades we have had several who stood for election out of a genuine desire to serve the country rather than as an easy way to enrich themselves. Like wise with the tens of thousands of government employed workers, not all of them are corrupt by any means. There are probably hundreds of workers who are content with the salary and non-contributing pensions, and do not solicit or accept bribes or "lunch money".

hrysippus says...

The old Bahamian saying goes like this; "Talk is cheap, but being related to a high ranking politician buys you enough influence to be given a large grant of Crown Land free and clear. " Have I remembered that correctly, or was it "money buy land"?

hrysippus says...

"Shot in the back of the head."? Well, obviously most all of us have accidentally shot someone in the back of the head; probably several different people several times......sigh.

Any comment from Birdie should not be taken seriously, if Fred was not paying her then she would be out of a job....jus sayin'......
