At long last an elected official has noticed the enormous green elephant standing in the corner of the room, not only has he noticed but he has seen fit to mention it's existence to the plebiscite. What a refreshing change from Bread and circuses, or should that be Grits and Junkanoo Carnival.
This is a good move by the government. There have been reports of rampant corruption in government departments over the years, removing the temptation of tens of thousands of cash dollars will almost certainly cut down on theft by state employed workers and at the same time greatly increase efficiency and convenience for those needing these services. I suspect that the only people who will object will be those who stand to lose an unofficial extra income that they had enjoyed up to now. This same scenario has just played out at RTD where the licensing process has got so much easier and better in every way.
It has been reported that very wealthy people employ the services of a public image manager. The task of the public image manager is to craft a positive and socially acceptable image of the client in the public opinion. The most famous recent case would be the rehabilitation of ex-president Bill Clinton's image after the well publicized Monica and impeachment incidents. The Clinton Foundation was reportedly created specifically for this task. Our country was for a long time the beneficiary of the Clinton Foundation Charity with regards to preventing hiv transmission to unborn babies. I think that the rehabilitation of another tarnished reputation is going on. Not Ortland's, he manages his own reputation himself.
Mr. Impirialist, Your logic is seriously flawed. The only reason that Singapore does so well financially is because you are sentenced to a public caning if you spit on the street or are caught chewing gum. both of which cause Obesity, high hypertension, and bi-polar,, as everyone knows.. Just compare the per capita murder rate in the UK or Canada, where possession of mariuana for personal consumption is legal, with The Bahamas where it is illegal. See my point?
Hi Dawes, it was reported in one of the local newspapers earlier his week, asking north of 20 mill. I would expect that the report is true. Also ask yourself which Bahamian had been in the most credible financial company for the longest and with the highest position.
When one of the single most prominent and experienced Bahamian born investor in our local economy has just liquidated his largest investment then we all should be asking; why? What does he see coming that he needs to get free of this fixed asset?
The writer of this letter lied repeatedly to the Customs officer. That he claims to have not known that computer hard drives and cameras are classified as electronics is not a sufficient excuse. He had ample opportunity to ask the officer about the contents of his bag, and ignorance of the law is never an excuse. Lying to a Customs Officer is a serious offence; he was treated with great forbearance, but as is usual gratitude is the most needed and least expressed of our human emotions.
