This is a good question being asked; "ow much money do we send to the UN on an annual basis?". For decades we sent them nothing, or so I have seen reported. We just let the contribution arrears build up. Same as many other countries did/do. Has The Bahamas ever actually paid anything towards our subscription ever? Any one know? We had a minister of finance once who was reportedly surprised to find out that he actually had to pay a WSC bill for the water consumption at his private residence. This country is full of people who are not very good at paying bills.

TribANonentity, you have descended to insults over rational discussion. I have never in any way benefited in a personal or peculiar way from any turning over of any land to foreigners.. I expect that you however are very much seeking to gain from getting some Crown land from the government. This is called being hypocritical.

What a timely editorial, a state slips into authoritarianism gradually, step by step the abuses meted out by state employees to the citizens increase until one day people wake up to what is happening and by then it can be too late. The editor is maintaining the long tradition of The Tribune of standing up against injustice.

Readers of this article should understand what been said here. The AG is saying that RCL is being unreasonable specifically in not engaging with Mr. Toby Smith about sharing access to RCL's customers, nothing more.. After the way Mr. Smith has been acting then it is quite understandable that they would not be keen to meet with him to discuss how he can benefit from their development.

hrysippus says...

The government most probably looked ar RCL's track record of managing multi million dollar projects, and their ability to, and past experience of, raising hundreds of millions of investment dollars. They then looked at what experience Mr. T. Smith has had in these two key business abilities. The government then made the obvious and correct choice of which of these two choices should be the one to develop the Western end pf Patadise island. The wrong choice would have been a financial disaster for almost everyone concerned.

We are in the midst of a pandemic. it would make sense to consult with Epidemiologists but I doubt that the country has one. The Physicians were not consulted? Well neither were the plumbers or mechanics, so what?

Reading the comments made reveals much about the commentator. Sixty years or so ago when the call went out for volunteers to sign up for military service to fight fascism there were several dozens brave Bahamians who answered the call; many others stayed right at home and made money for their families while other braver ones fought on their behalf. The commentators who attack Mr. Smith and his work of keeping the authorities within the framework of the rule of law are probably descended from one of those families who chose comfort and safety over risk and service. Those no risk families never taught their members how important it is to uphold human rights. The brave ones who went off to serve understood how important human rights are and have passed their understanding onto their descendants. The country is fortunate to have Mr. Smith safeguarding our collective interests.

Expecting that Her Majesty's State Security Service is capable and willing to fully investigate wrong doing perpetuated by members of it's own force is like expecting a Minnesota police officer to intervene when one his colleagues is forcibly subduing and possibly killing a suspect during an arrest.

John Kennedy has been raised to the status of a political demi-god. he was an adulterer, grandchild of a criminal bootlegger, and under the influence of prescription pharmaceuticals for most or all of his reign as president. He managed to get his country needlessly involved in the Vietnam war which cost hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese lives and over sixty thousand uS military serviceman. I do not think his speeches should be lauded and held up as a good example, but perhaps Mr. Evans knows better than me.
