Throughout the whole history of our country no one has ever accused any politician trying to get him or herself elected to public office of telling nothing but the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Just saying.
This government appointed state employee is reported as saying; "This sparked her warning to all Bahamian employers that, in dismissing workers, they must follow the law and their own documented disciplinary procedures “so as to avoid error". It seems a dangerous thing for this person to say as it could be interpreted as saying that companies that do not follow their own self imposed procedures are somehow breaking the law. they are not, although it could possibly be the basis for a civil action; breach of contract or some such. Over reach in action by the bureaucracy perhaps?
I welcome correction but are not 80% or so of the consumers, who generate taxes and private business income in this country, either visiting tourists or off shore bankers? Is this legislation designed to protect them I wonder?
50 years of independence. 50 years of chronic and continuing underinvestment in our judicial system. Our elected officials have thought it was more important to fly themselves, their family members, and political cronies off on first class trips abroad than to spend that money on new courts and the necessary personnel to staff them. 'Justice delayed is justice denied; is an old maxim but true nonetheless. Putting people who have not been convicted in our disgusting prison is not a good answer.
I bought my first motorcycle, a BSA C15 250cc, 52 years ago. I have owned and ridden a motorcycle most every year since that time. To survive you have to drive very defensibly, and assume that the drivers of cars are going to both not see you and do something stupid, without signaling their intention of course. Motorcycles can be dangerous to their riders, especially when the rider is young and feels invincible. Also remember that close to 100 people are killed driving or travelling in cars every year in the Bahamas; cars are dangerous as well, should we be advised not to travel in a car? There is a great prejudice against motorcycles; not all of it justified.
Social Services to help displaced Bahamians – not other nationalities, is it possible that the people who are most in need of help are those children born in this country who do not have a nationality? As always the innocents suffer most, but we do not care. Ignore a problem and it will go away, or else it might just fester. I hope everyone has been taught their real un spun history about the previous most senior politician encouraging immigration into a particular island to create a supporter voter base that would vote for his candidate and also provide the labour needed by that particular candidate.
In the good old days before corruption and narcotics smuggling got out of hand, the contesting members promises were most often for the delivery of the other half of the torn in half 5 pound note, delivered to the voters after the election; then came along Sweet Mouth; you will no longer have to work if you vote for me and my party; you retired people will be given free money for the rest of your life; you can all get a gubmint job that you can never be fired from; you need hew no more, nor carry any water. Vote for me and mine, it's all for me, baby. How get the country into a 12 billion dollar debt hole. Sell dreams.
Would it not be good for the country if we were told how much the annual rent and maintenance fee is, who the beneficial owner of the company that owns the rental space is, and just how much the beneficial owner donated to which political parties candidates in the last and next elections?
I find that I must ask a very distressing question; do we we have a State Sanctioned Death squad operating in our country? Why do so many people whose location is monitored by the State's agency end up being killed with the perpetuators of the murder never identified?
People who make their living by working in the religious arena do not make good politicians. Politics is the art of compromise while religion allows no compromise at all, you must believe completely and unquestioningly what you are told. A lust for power beyond the pulpit does not end well sometimes.
