I'm surprised that anything in the Bahamas can be "rocked" anymore, much less the cabinet.
In May, 2000 when Archdeacon William Thompson was shot and killed, the country was "rocked" as crime had now infiltrated "the church".
In August, 2010 a 3-month old being held in a car by his father was shot and the country was again "rocked" . OMG! A baby had been shot.
In February, 2017, a 1-year old was shot in another drive-by. People said, "Lord, they shooting children" and the country was again "rocked".
Now we have an 8-month old that not only been shot, but killed and somehow our cabinet and, no doubt, our country is again "rocked".
We done do all the rocking we needed to 'roc with doc' and get the FNM elected for change. How much rockin' we gat to do before we make up our minds as a society with a Government at the helm whose mantra is "It's the people's time" before we seriously address crime.
To hell with rockin!
Pass the necessary legislation, if necessary, that takes our criminal matters from the Privy Council (because no murder will ever be the worst of the worse - that's clear) and puts our criminal matters before a Caribbean court that has no issues with capital punishment
Pass the necessary legislation that stops bail from being granted to repeat offenders for serious crimes. It only keeps keeps our hard-working policeman frustrated.
You are the cabinet. You are the government. We elected you for change. Pass the relevant laws and stop the rockin'!!
Bahamians just would not stop this "something for nothing" attitude. That's why these schemes work. We have alot of gullible people out there. When they're not gambling and making the numbers boys millionaires, they're throwing their hard-earned money away on schemes like these. Trust me when I say that the Government will have a hard down cracking down on these shysters because the mentality of the people is such that they will always strive.
It's hard to feel sorry for the new car businesses. Their prices for new cars are grossly inflated and the poor consumer just cannot afford them. 20% down with a 5-year term to pay it off and a heft insurance payment to boot. Makes sense to just join an asue and buy a car for about $5,000 cash. Although I agree the market is oversaturated with used Jap cars, at least they are affordable, they are definitely not gas guzzlers and the air pollution is considerably less.
Here's an ide for a get rich quick fix: Open a Jap car parts shop. In another 5 years when these cars start to have problems, you will be rich.
Think the whole idea was to give them temporary jobs for votes. How else do you explain how approximately 1,700 workers are added to the payroll just before election but mysteriously couldn't be employed in the 5 years that the PLP was in power.
I understand that the whole idea was give them jobs until after election and they would have been let go anyhow. The PLP just wanted to get back in.
Publishing the names is not the only answer. It's also fixing the system. How else do you explain why a foreigner is able to keep a job for 10 years in the same position without anyone noticing that no one was trained to replace him.
Check this out: The procedure to get a work permit especially for a high-ranking job requires that you first apply for a Labour Certificate. In order to get the Labour Certificate you have to advertise the job for three consecutive days one of the local newspapers. The application for the Labour Certificate requires that you submit the responses to the ad. So even if a "qualified Bahamian" has applied for the job, what do you do? You simply don't send his response with your application. Instead you send the responses of the persons who did not qualify to make it look like there is no Bahamian qualified for the job.
Additionally on the application for the Labour Certificate you have to fill in the name of a Bahamian you are training to replace the expat. Any old "Jo Blow" will do. So how is it that 3 years later the expat is still on the job and nobody is noticing that his work permit is being renewed every year and the Bahamian who's name was put on the application form has yet to replace him.
The Labour Certificate is a waste of time. It's merely a formality and the persons who hire the expats know it.
But I blame the Government/Minister of Labour who have allowed it to happen. It explains why the place is saturated with foreigners. We do not follow through on our own policies. We do not have checks and balances.
I've seen this statement printed in the other daily at least twice: "Gibson was seen entering CID for questioning without crutches". Someone even commented on social media that he was seen entering the building in a suit with shoes on and NO crutches - the implication in both cases being that he's faking it.
I get the not rush to judgment that the church promotes - after all none of us are without sin but Mr. Gibson has put himself in this position and by that I mean the appearance of corruption, starting with the rumours of kickbacks he was getting while Minister of Housing, the Anna Nicole saga that cost him his post.as Minister of Immigration... and then he comes back and now this.
I would have stepped down and not returned after the first very embarrassing scandal.
There is an appearance of corruption with the PLP and most notably with Mr. Gibson and a few others.
Usually if someone is innocent these things do not stick. I find it interesting that so many have this impression of him. Prosecution of persecution.... only time will tell.
