... if only you had mentioned that the Biden administration adjusted the definition of inflation 2 years ago to make their numbers look better, however some will buy the bluster. Real question is whether or not a dollar went further 4 years ago than it does now and the answer is a definite YES!
... what's interesting to me is that the commenters above should be old enough to remember when our people were more mannerly, disciplined and conscientious that those of the past few decades. Tourists who came to our shores, spoke of how pleasant and mannerly our people were back then. Those people were raised on the same Christian values espoused by the writer, and mocked by the pontificators; children lovingly corrected, but not abused. I was one of them and I think I turned out pretty ok.
Sad the pontificators can't distinguish the difference between purposeful discipline and abuse and they fail to see how our straying from the values that had us more grounded as a people then is at the root of all our social ills now! But then again, pontificators will pontificate!
... taxes are not the problem, unchecked government spending is! There should be a move for no more new taxes until 100% of VAT revenues are used to pay down existing debt!!
... people have complained about violent crime in our country without considering for one minute the role of violent, unvetted illegal immigrants from Haiti who have been pouring into this country for decades. We never considered that when people break laws to enter your country, they are not likely to be law abiding. It is time to close entrance of any sloops into our waters, deny them aid and ask other Caribbean countries to accept "refugees". We have already done far more than we should have concerning that country to our detriment and we a paying a heavy price for it!!
... government must not be allowed to extract more from us in taxes when they have shown themselves to be irresponsible with the taxes they already collect! They collect VAT under the premise of paying down the national debt but, use the money for other purposes while the debt increases. More money in taxes is more money to waste. No to income tax, but yes to greater accountability in government spending!
... many Palestinians have aided and abetted Hamas and other terrorist organizations for years, so many of those people are not innocents, but enemy combatants. There have been offers on 5 separate occasions from Israel for a 2 state solution that Palestinians rejected, so they are not interested in peaceful coexistence, but the annihilation of Israel. After the atrocities of Oct. 7th, let Israel do what it must to ensure its survival. It is war and just as Israeli innocents were collateral damage so too will the Palestinians be!
... can Mr. Allen explain why a government who predictably mismanages money should have access to more?? They collected VAT to pay down the national debt, but they use the collected revenue for other purposes as the national debt soars!
The issue is not about collecting more revenue, but exercising fiscal prudence, something governments in this country do not understand!
... so once again the shrinking middle class has to pay for those who can't afford medical care, ie. Bahamians and illegals, through government imposed taxes. People expect something for nothing, but it doesn't work in the real world and it certainly won't work in healthcare, but when people, like Sands, use real issues to score political points you end up with dysfunctional systems and a 4th world country like the Bahamas!
“I don’t blame what they doing right now because this ain’t our land,” Mr Fren said as his wife held their six-year-old child. “My point is you have to give a chance. I know PLP and FNM. My daughter is a Bahamian. She got a Bahamian passport, and my son got a Bahamian passport.
Find his children and revoke their passports if neither of their parents is a Bahamian and if those parents came in illegally. We have allowed them to circumvent the law for far too long! I am willing to chip in for a ticket to deport them!
