Children (like adults) need to eat food to live. These children have parents who cannot feed them - or they were born to children themselves (children resulting from teen pregnancies).
There is only one soup kitchen in Nassau which is on the corner of Blue Hill & Wulff Rd.
Government does not have a soup kitchen for children to come to and get food. The churches (except that one) don't have any either.
Even if they did - what then? What do we do keep feeding these children until they are 70 years old? There are no jobs, they have no basic education. There is no solution.
But, guess what our/government/churches solution is ????????? Make the duty rate on baby food and diapers etc be FREE - to encourage the creation of more of these children.
The problems referred to in this article are only the beginning. Visit the delivery room at PMH any time of day or night, and view the future.
Instead of 40% by 2030 (which is stupid - nobody can see that far into the future in our current world) - they should aim for 15% by the end of 2015.
A more reasonable percentage - and a time frame that would cause people to focus and get things done instead of just saying "man, 2030 is far far away. relax yaseff"
Government needs to stop these dealers from bringing in cars with names like "Ford" and "Chevy" etc. which people think are American but then find out they were made at the plants in Brazil and Mexico and all over the place and you CANT get parts for them.
So does this mean that so-called "shadow ministers" really have no access to actual information in a timely manner? How is it that he is only discussing this now instead of when it was first proposed? Perhaps because the reigning government is not required to inform "shadow ministers" of anything?
I guess anything is possible, because PMs are not even required to have Ministers of anything now - they can be the Minister of everything and make all their MPs be "Ministers of State" who have no actual power.
Fourty years of "independence" and we have only had 3 PMs. How can we say "our Bahamaland" when all the LAND belongs to the Crown ?
This was probably a staged act by both parties to change the subject away from the likely horrible conditions at both childrens' home - and instead talk about who's badd.
Nobody gets blamed for the real problems. Let's give the people something to else to talk about.
Instead of government (under the disguise of bec) paying (by buying the fuel oil for the power plant) the power bills of these hotels - so they can keep 100 or 200 people employed - to the tune of millions of dollars,
perhaps they should calculate whether it would be better to pay these employees to stay home and give them one year to find new jobs, and let the hotel/s shut down.
In other words, the employees can go home NOW, and will keep getting their weekly or monthly checks from the government (instead of the hotel), and the hotel can shut down (if they wish) and face the courts for their arrears.
That may end up costing less money over the next 12 months. It may not - but it ought to be considered by those who have the figures to tabulate.
Thank you for your considered remarks. Your points are spot on.
The answer to ALL questions is simple:
...because Abaco people have NEVER stood together and apparently never will. Abaco is divided into different "families" - such as Sawyers, Pinder, Roberts, Albury, Sweeting, etc. Some of these families associate with other and others not with others in a complex mix. None of them accept all the others at "true Abaconians."
They would rather import (whatever) from (for example) Jamaica, rather than buy it from their "brothers" who make/obtain/grow/whatever it right here on the island - because that "brother" has a certain last name to which they do not associate.
The solution to our road problem is simple:
ALL taxis, and all hotel operators come together and choose a day (not too distant - like 3 days from now) to strike for 2 days.
Tourists arriving at the airport will have no way to get to their hotels, and even if they walk there will find all rooms locked up and nobody there to serve them.
They will have to pay for changed tickets and return to their country.
Do this once per month, on different dates each month and only choose the day 3 days in advance so that word does not get out in time for people to make other arrangements.
Tourism revenue will be lost - our reputation as Abaco will go down - and government will fear for loss of future revenue (ie. because word among travel agents will tell visitors not to come here because they might be left out in the cold).
Once government sees that we are serious - then they will get serious.
As long as we are NOT, then they have carte blanche to ignore us, and leave us standing on the side of the pot-hole road like the uncoordinated idiots that we are (collectively).
United we stand, divided we fall - is not just a cool sounding phrase in a history book. It actually means something - and for us it means we are falling.
all of this solar investment stuff is completely unnecessary. All they need to do is remove the law that makes it illegal for bahamians to use solar panels !!!
at present MANY bahamians are using them, and they are even being sold in nassau at retail in broad daylight.
Will this be just like the numbers houses? Something illegal that just happens every day?
Why not make it legal for bahamians to harness solar energy and use it in their homes?
2 murders in 24 hours? I'm sure more than 2 babies were born at PMH in the last 24 hours - so don't worry, the population is still growing. Food and rent prices will continue to go up. Relax yaseff.
He knows the severe shortage of hospital beds, basic medicines, and overworked doctors on rediculous work schedules, underpaid nurses, and nurse student graduates who can't get paid but who have had their lunch stipend taken away because they are no longer students.
If I ran my hospital the way he runs his, I wouldn't want to go there to get a splinter taken out of my finger.
Smart guy.
Maybe it will do him some good as well to see how a real hospital works abroad, and he can bring some of those 20th century ideas and technology (not 21st - that's hoping for too much) back here and put them into practice.
