I think we have some seriously homophobic people in our society, that are creating bizarre scenarios, and trying to stimulate fear in this Christian based society, that gay marriage will become somehow legal if this amendment was enforced. Truly they are ignoring the fact that this amendment only seeks to address discrimination between male and female. period. If you want a woman not to be discriminated against, and if she is, to have legal recourse, then vote YES to this amendment. everyone needs to just take a breath, count to 10, and realize this amendment is necessary for equality of women. And I am a married, Christian woman, not gullible, not blind.
why should the public 'have understanding' when the lights go out, when BEC doesn't 'have understanding' when they charge us these exorbitant amounts for electricity, increase the surcharge, and blowout your appliances with these power surges and drops? Get it together bec, no one has 'understanding' for yall...
It's the Bahamian mentality, the same way we can only elect 2 persons over and over again to be Prime minister, we only choose those who have failed us before to lead us again!
I'm bothered by any discussion of VAT as if it is a viable option for Bahamians. What ever form it comes in, whether it is on BEC bills or not, etc., etc. it will devastate the Bahamian economy. Why are we having this discussion as if this is a rational option? We need to march down Rawson Square people! That is the only time they hear us. They think that the noise in the market is only a few disgruntled FNMS, they need to know its their grassroot support that is crying for immediate recall of this bill. The Bay Street Boys will have their watches and jewelry exempt so the FNM hierarchy will be happy, so its the poor PLP (and FNM and DNA) that will suffer, and the soon to be downgraded middleclass. We need to hit the streets, that is the only way. we talk about saving reefs, sharks, dogs etc. who is going to fight the cause of the poor Bahamian man/woman/child? The PLP have abandoned their core, who do they think will support them in the next election?
my first time commenting on a newspaper article, but I had to respond. I am so angry, frustrated and perplexed over the PLP's implementation of VAT. How can they tax the poor people who cannot afford their light, phone, food, gas, rent bills now? The social services system is a sad joke. If they know that it will disadvantage the poor so they want to implement 'mechanisms' to counteract it, then shouldn't that indicate to them that VAT is a stupid idea? Why seek to put in a tax system that you KNOW will disadvantage the people? If you know where the money is, go after those with the money, dumb idiots! But of course they are not, because how can you exempt watches and jewelry and not exempt bread basket items? who is benefitting from that exemption? the Bay Street Boys of course! this is unbelievable... and then they sign a $600M agreement for WASTE? that's why they need these tax dollars to WASTE it!
