This is the wrong direction - FNM needs to eliminate customs duties and collect taxes elsewhere - don't invest more to support a failed tax system that should be replaced anyway.
With all due respect -Countless bad decisions by government led to the mess we are in with crime.
Not the least of which is not listening to the people when it comes to the numbers houses!
Not listening to qualified advisors (hopefully there are some up there) when it comes to improving the economy. Taxing the crap out of everyone is not the answer. What in this economy inspires a Bahamian to build anything never mind innovate?
Not believing in private industry over a government stifled economy.
Not dealing with corruption and waste in the government sector.
Hey how many liquor stores and numbers houses can one fit in a square mile?
...please leaders - get real and stop being ignorant to what is needed.
"Another Government must seriously consider redefining this holiday (Majority Rule Day) into something that all Bahamians, of every Race, Creed, Sex, or Ethnicity can be proud of and fully partake in."
How about the government just staying out of the private sector! and work on ways to reduce the cost and ease of doing business and thus the cost of living.
- take positive steps to help ease the burden Bahamian private businesses before it's too late... (ask why small retailers are closing) not handouts - just smart decisions that spur business production locally...
- start by eliminating duties on all tools, construction vehicles, full size trucks and construction materials, paint, fencing, even! Wow imagine people being able to afford to fix their property after the Hurricane without handouts - reduce the size of government by 30% or more- reduce the allocation of government vehicles- review all government expenditures with a view to reducing waste.
...don't think the communist country cares what colour we are - they will stomp all over us as needed to accommodate their agenda.
Stay positive if you can manage... we will never have sensible prices on this rock until the major foreign retail chains are allowed to do business here and the tax structure is fully overhauled.
You are absolutely correct... the duty rates are disgusting. Look at how many buildings need maintenance, how many cars need replacing, how hard it can be to maintain anything with parts and supplies costing two or three times the US prices - and a fluctuating local economy. The government needs to take a serious look at the duties and slash them ALL in half. Get a professional opinion - cutting rates would mean relief to the people and likely more revenue for the government . It makes no sense to add VAT and duty on ANY food items and certainly not health insurance products - NONE! How about you TAX hard liquor etc, - one of the main causes of foolishness on our streets. Come on Government, please get it together and think please - make progressive changes to the system. The track record indicates that the Government is not great at running any business so why come up with a national health insurance scheme on the one hand while you can wait to privatize everything else. The UK and Canada have those systems and they don't work efficiently or effectively a lot of the time from what I hear - long waits for care - an over extended system that is continually hungry for funding. Think of another solution - perhaps encourage competition from around the world and charge on that competition for entering the market - you will likely still end up with a less costly product (such as health insurance, life insurance, food).
This guy has no business representing the Bahamian people.
What an absolute disgusting idiot. Free speech must remain free, we cannot let things slide back to the 80's mentality - black or white - this or that.
