1) announce that no further work permit applications for this will be accepted or processed period for five years or other period to evaluate the effectiveness of the deterant. No further under the table deals will then be possible. Imagine the pressure relief on the system. 2) leagalize or deport those that are in the system already. 3) leagalize the current children born here that are stuck without any status and have never known anywhere else to call home due to no fault or action of their own. Real patriotic tax paying citizens should result. 4) obtain clear proof that NIB is being paid for all work permit holders prior to renewing any permit annually.
Regarding the school system - it is terrible and should be removed from government's list of business's they manage- subsidize and privatize the schools one at a time (public private partnerships?).
Agreed that the system of Duties is a failed system. BUT It does NOT make sense to give any government more money until those who have stolen from the consolidated f'ing fund are held accountable!
Do we see any concrete results yet? When will we get full transparency and the thieves locked up? When?
Perception is that things are/ will be better BUT is it just business as usual at the top?!!
STOP wasting / stealing our tax money before adding more taxes period!
The reality is that Bay Street is in as poor condition as it was 30 years ago and worse. That's our front yard and it is nasty for the most part.
We need a waterfront maritime museum, waterfront restaurants/ cafes with nice, clean and inviting outdoor seating all along the "market range", clean streets and alleys, residential buildings in the heart of town, a no tolerance policy for persons harassing tourists (selling drugs or whatever).
Perhaps add safe, Bahamian owned small boat activities along the waterfront.
Set target time lines for renewing the entire Bay Street strip (Nassau street) West to East (Deveaux) and publish the schedule so persons can come forward with investment/ development ideas and funding.
Remove all import duties on tourism related investments made by true tax paying Bahamian owned businesses for 5 years or more. Work towards easing the cost of doing business to grow the private sector. Grow the private sector by reducing taxes and you should in fact increase your tax revenue and the government's burden of needing to create jobs.
This is the wrong direction - FNM needs to eliminate customs duties and collect taxes elsewhere - don't invest more to support a failed tax system that should be replaced anyway.
With all due respect -Countless bad decisions by government led to the mess we are in with crime.
Not the least of which is not listening to the people when it comes to the numbers houses!
Not listening to qualified advisors (hopefully there are some up there) when it comes to improving the economy. Taxing the crap out of everyone is not the answer. What in this economy inspires a Bahamian to build anything never mind innovate?
Not believing in private industry over a government stifled economy.
Not dealing with corruption and waste in the government sector.
Hey how many liquor stores and numbers houses can one fit in a square mile?
...please leaders - get real and stop being ignorant to what is needed.
"Another Government must seriously consider redefining this holiday (Majority Rule Day) into something that all Bahamians, of every Race, Creed, Sex, or Ethnicity can be proud of and fully partake in."
How about the government just staying out of the private sector! and work on ways to reduce the cost and ease of doing business and thus the cost of living.
- take positive steps to help ease the burden Bahamian private businesses before it's too late... (ask why small retailers are closing) not handouts - just smart decisions that spur business production locally...
- start by eliminating duties on all tools, construction vehicles, full size trucks and construction materials, paint, fencing, even! Wow imagine people being able to afford to fix their property after the Hurricane without handouts - reduce the size of government by 30% or more- reduce the allocation of government vehicles- review all government expenditures with a view to reducing waste.
