The University of The Bahamas is a glorified political entity that has been forced fed by the PLP .......... By hiring Smith from Hampton College, it was to give the impression that UB was of a certain standard ........... however, the physical conditions, limited personnel and financial constraints make this Smith hire look even more unreasonable and unrealistic.
Bahamians do not see UB as an institution to place on a pedestal ....... SAC has more prestige.
Most Bahamian public school parents are probably ashamed to tell their high school children their own school exam grades .......... but they are quick to condemn the schools today.
Many "successful" Bahamians sitting in high social positions will equally be embarrassed to share their high school GCE grades ............ We should be careful how we compare eras
Let us be honest .......... Most Bahamians over 50 either did not sit a single GCE O'Level or if they did, probably got low GCE pass grades. But they are so "smart" that they are quick to condemn the children today. Thank God ....... there is no more Common Entrance exam.
Those "good ole days" surely did not produce a lot of high GCE grades when only 10% of public school students took the GCE exams. Now, 85% of public school students sit BGCSE exams and are graded A to G.
There is no more selection of "smart" students to sit the BJC or BGCSE exams ....... all students are encouraged to sit the exams in public schools in order to meet graduation standards. It is unfair to compare the few high performing private schools with all others. This elitist mentality must stop. But our people always love to live a double standard.
But that is where we are today ........ and we care not to reflect on what we did in the past.
**Parents do not invest time in their children’s studies, and so the children invest time in everything else but their schoolwork. To the extent that a child grows up seeing school as something he has to go to because it is the law of the land, as opposed to seeing education as the food without which he will live a starved life, will be the extent to which our schools turn out Bahamians year after year who cannot compete in the job market and who struggle to see their way clear to a better life.
Too many parents dress up their children, but do not teach them manners and respect.
Too many parents buy their children expensive gadgets, but do not go to PTA meetings, orientation exercises, extracurricular activities or PT conferences.
Too many parents will take their children shopping in the USA, but they won't take them to the Family Islands to allow them to learn about their country and their family roots.
Too many parents will sign up for private or government loans to send their children to US colleges, but they will not encourage them to come back and build their country after graduating.
This is what is wrong with most of our Bahamian parents in the education system.
A parent ............. where is the whole frigging PTA???????? ....... Parents wake up!!!!!
If parents were really concerned, these school principals, teachers and support staff would have been accountable ..... but everyone sitting back waiting on Big Government to solve the problem.
We have become a bunch of brainless, tech-addicted fools looking for the next viral video.
Parents have to parent ........... It starts with holding your children and their education sacred.
The FNM is just perpetrating Pindling's doctrine of making Bahamians "fat, dumb and happy" ........ It just so happens that no one is really happy today, except a few PEPs.
It is our fault as Bahamians that we have made these politicians "gods" over us ....... they are now the technical experts and policy makers, the sugar daddies and caregivers ......... from the citizens' cradle to grave.
Democracy ceases to exist when the State becomes a giant welfare system for its citizens.
First ....... understand HOW private schools operate in this country and then try and compare them with public schools. For the record, only a FEW private schools are producing excellent results as well ...... many are NOT. That is why the Government should publish ALL of the exam results for EVERY exam centre (public & private).
