Mitchell and Davis need to retire ASAP ............ They are serving NO purpose as national leaders ............. Just talking heads and travelling clowns.
These so-called Bahamian tourism arrivals records are very deceptive.
The truth is that MOST of these visitors come by cruise ships and they stay at private cays where the interaction and monies spent are minimal when it comes to the average Bahamian entrepreneur. Cruise visitors and second home owners' exploitation of the AirBnb market have robbed ordinary Bahamians of valuable tourism revenue. The stopover visitors ratio to the total arrivals has either decreased or increased slightly over the past 10-20 years.
The Government is hanging its hat on more departure taxes per cruise visitor as a means to increase Treasury revenue. But the exorbitant tax breaks and the lack of integration of the tourism product means that at least 85% of the tourism dollars still are exported from our country by the investors and the vendors. These "inclusive resorts" and "cruise ports" do not provide as many jobs or opportunities for Bahamians as they tout in the media. They are actually destroying the native cultural life of the Bahamian tourism product.
The country is only extracting a small fraction from tourism. That is why there is NO comparative increase in our GDP versus the tourism numbers. The country's GDP is still much the same as it was 5-10 years ago, despite the increasing millions of tourists that have come via cruise ships over the same period.
Numbers lie ................... and these numbers are surely doing that, regardless of which party is in power or who the Minister is.
Observer, we can be negative about this, but it won't help us at any rate.
It is like the country's schools ......... build new schools and put new furniture and post new teachers with new administrators and hopefully a new culture with better results will be created.
Let us hope that this will be a similar end result of building a new Parliament. The country cannot function without a Legislature, whether we like it or not.
The PLP has done this every time there is a problem .......... The PLP has created so-called SPVs to deal with debt-ridden corporations and other Govt entities.
When there is a national problem to solve, the PLP create toothless Committees or Commissions that produce reports that have NO effects on the original issue at hand.
Keith Bell should have been fired and a Commission of Inquiry should have been convened to dig into the deep corruption that has occured under his remit at the Dept. of Immigration.
Instead, this toothless trio will present a report that Davis & the PLP will use to deflect from the serious issues that took place at the Immigration Department under Keith Bell.
