I guess I will be in the minority here. Mr. Myers said that the pool of qualified Bahamians are limited and that he is "forced to engage expatriates." Then, he decries the brain drain, which is tantamount to admitting that there are qualified Bahamians but they choose to stay abroad. The question, then is why do they choose to stay away? Part of the reason is that Mr. Myers, and people of his ilk -i.e. decision makers- choose not to pay Bahamians, but rather have very little difficulty paying expats. Pay the qualified Bahamian what you pay the expat and, though this is an anecdote, Bahamians would come back and work. I know I would. Myers is a hypocrite on this issue.
Your ungracious example (bathroom) notwithstanding, I have no issues with your dislike of Brave or Fred. Have no issues with your apparent affection for Godfrey. But, please, let's not try to rewrite history here. Godfrey, in his hey day, was the worst of the worst UBP minister/politician. His bipartisanship and loyalty toward a system that disenfranchised the majority of Bahamians - via denial of education, his overt and willing support of a system that treated the majority as third class citizens and his abject discontent for the majority (all documented, google before you respond to me) is not "the opposition saying stuff to hurt {me}". These are just hard facts. In my view, he, as is the case with many current and past recipients, do not deserve this honour. It is unfortunately another example of a pathetic case of the black man "rewarding" his tormentor because, in this instance, he gave us a sailboat or two. Disappointing, but not surprising.
Joeblow, I do not -repeat, do not- disagree with anything that you have said. But, I do think that you missed the point of this article. The issue here is "livable wage". In your, again, very true submission, you presume that people make enough money to save. I strongly disagree with your assertion that people need to recognize the importance of saving, all of us - from Eastern Road to Lyford Cay to Len Bias Corner - understand that we have to save. The problem is "livable wage". We do not make enough to save, simple as that! You can't save if you have no disposable income, it is not a question of knowledge, but rather, ability. It is analogous to telling someone who can't swim that if they were just to jump in the ocean, then magically, they will turn into the next Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace. No, it takes the means to do so (i.e. ability to swim, or in our discussion, ability to make a wage conducive for saving). Why the trips to Florida? Because everything here it vastly, vastly overpriced! One has no choice but to go to Florida (or anywhere for that matter) and buy in bulk. Why gamble? Because grown adults have a right to do with their money as they see fit - even if you or I may disagree on what the money is spent on. Tangentially, I like to spend my money on French wines. Should I be castigated for this? But, let's move from gambling and go back to the point. A livable wage allows workers to save more, hence the importance of increasing the same. Most of us in The Bahamas, after rent, electricity, food, i.e., the basics, simply do not have residual disposable income to same (I applaud those of you that do!). So, yes, if we want to be irresponsible, as you correctly point out, a minimum wage will not help us. But, I do not believe that this is the substantive situation. We do need to make more, the current minimum wage is simply not enough to foster savings. Then, we can talk about how best to use disposable income.
Actually, that's not true, Economist - generally speaking. The Bahamians are here but, after doing the calculus, i.e. the low pay of a politician, having to solve every problem as far as Bahamians are concerned (and, of course, you better stay broke while you do it!), the gross intrusion on your public like and that of your family, and of course the utterly ridiculous, ungrateful Bahamians (just read the nonsense on this message board), the intelligent Bahamians have, in my view, made the intelligent decision and have remained in private life.
Please go and jump in a cave and remove yourself from society. Minnis' distasteful language is a disgrace both to himself, his parents and anyone who espouses such views. Ridiculous. And you Bahamians wonder why the cream of the Bahamas crop don't enter politics. Trolls like you are the reason.
