The article says there were 20 police involved shootings for 2020 where there were 11 fatalities and 11 non-fatal, that's 22. Mmmm...interesting! Does anyone review these articles prior to publication? There are spelling errors, grammatical errors, etc.

That was a good analysis of the FNM's lackluster performance for the last 4 years. Clearly the Prime Minister knows they did a terrible job. Now he wants to blame it on everything else other than him and his team.

Interesting that the housing conversation is focused on those in shantytowns. There are Bahamians living on the streets, living in cars, etc. No need to find them adequate housing, right?

Let's stop playing games. Laws are laws are laws. They need to be enforced. If you know your structure is not up to code and that you should not rebuild it, why be surprised when it's torn down. Before you rebuilt, where were you? You had to be staying somewhere, right?

Can things be done in a better way? Perhaps. But, let's not play this game where we're supposed to look the other way in certain circumstances. It's sad that people have to live in poor housing. It's sad that people suffer financially, are illegal, are forced to survive the best way they can. It's extremely unfortunate. But, we can't help with our limited resources. The UN makes a statement. How many countries in the world have a budget to improve the lives of illegal immigrants or everyone in need of proper housing?

I agree with Mr. Johnson as well. It's incredible for the UN to be criticizing us on this situation. As Mr. Johnson said, there are many components of the Haitian immigration crisis that they clearly overlooked. They should focus on what can be done for Haiti so that people are risking their lives to get to other countries to live illegally.

Another thing, the UN is headquartered in NY. Did they forget the immigration issues the US continues to face which under the previous administration was a true humanitarian crisis.

It is sad the situation that Haitians find themselves in. The need to go outside of their country to find a way to survive economically. It is terrible. It is a humanitarian crisis. However, the laws of each country are the laws of that country. You can not expect that the laws are overlooked simply because of your situation. Humanity, compassion, etc is needed when dealing with people particularly those finding themselves in bad circumstances. However, laws have to be followed.

Didn't Marvin Dames say last year how great a job the police did in lowering the crime stats? What happened this year Marvin?

Marvin took credit for lower numbers that came about as a result of Covid lockdowns and curfews. The police didn't do anything to impact those numbers. Given the murder figures now, we clearly beyond the crisis point. Marvin, the Commissioner and the PM need to articulate an actual strategy to policing. You can't simply say you going to increase your presence in certain areas. we paid for shotspotter. We paid for drones. Where are the results? We are constantly buying new police vehicles. We even have cars for the COVID ambassadors. Yet, things are spiraling out of control. Shame on you Marvin! Shame on you!

Are these people serious? An illegal invasion and trampling on rights? Really? If you are illegal and you have a built a structure that was not constricted to building code on land that you don't own, what rights do you expect to have? These are flagrant abuse of our laws and people expect the government to condone that. You're illegal, that subjects you to deportation. You're expected to purchase land, but you squat. You are expected to build in line with the building code, but you don't. As Bahamians we have to abide by the law. So, why should an illegal immigrant not abide by the law?

Anyone who thinks the government is wrong in invading, should get their heads checked. If people were physically abused or verbally abused, then that should be addressed. Every person regardless of immigration status have rights. But, the rights of an illegal immigrant can not be greater than that of legal persons.

Amen! Totally agree. It makes zero sense to talk about new taxes when every government has done a poor job collecting the existing ones. Real property tax, not collected. Issues with Customs with collection.

Even outside of tax collections, we have uncollected revenue at BPL and Water.and Sewerage. A couple of years ago Immigtstion said they were owed money. It's just ridiculous. The system is broken and instead of fixing it, the government wants to get another thing to break.

Lanisha should have been fired. Resignation! This country us a joke. Lanisha Rolle, D'Aguilar, even Minnis, just one big joke.

trueBahamian says...

The murder count is high. Were is the Mr. Marvin Dames? Looks like the "good work" done in 2020 isn't what we're getting now.

2020 stats were low because of lockdowns and earlier curfews, not policing. Yet, Mr. Dames had the nerve to take credit. Unbelievable!
