Something is odd here. How many times in the history of this country have we seen the Financial Secretary from the Ministry of Finance in the media? Is Mr. Johnson the unofficial Minister of Finance? Is there a power struggle here?

We (the people) are paying for a government but are getting tickets for the circus.

Late data is definitely a major issue. Listening to US news it appears that they have some similar issues. So, it's struggle. It's time for them to listen to suggestions and work on a better strategy.

While we tackle the medical.side, I'm just pissed at the joke of a committee called the economic recovery committee. Such a waste of time. Such colossal incompetence. I can't believe some of the supposed intellectuals sitting on that committee is allowing their faces to be associated with it. As a buddy pointed out to me, the sitting Central Bank Governor should not be sitting on this committee. It's a conflict. I wonder if he really believes that this dumb idea that is circulating is a smart one. If we will.lose let's say more than 1.5 billion in tourism revenue and someone shows up I believe if two guys and a monkey.arrive here and pay us in bananas we can cover our shortfall. That's how I see the statement from the Financial Secretary. We're in so much trouble.

trueBahamian says...

This committee is a waste of time as expected. The PM should resign. If this is the extent of the recovery conversation, we can all figure out, the government has no clue. Keep in mind this one idea, which is terrible, was actually pitched by someone not on the committee. So, we have about 14 people on a committee with zero ideas. This is the extent of our plans for an economic recovery. We can all figure out they will be paid for this crap or get favors later or both.

This is extremely disturbing. Do the rest of my fellow countrymen not see that our situation is dire. We have a government that's grossly unequipped to handle any national emergency. It's grossly deficient in intellectual talent. It's a roving band of yes men/women and friends. This is textbook banana republic bs. On the other side of the political divide, we have more of the same. Is it time for those of us that can leave this rock to leave?

trueBahamian says...

This is scary. We are in serious trouble. We are in the midst of an economic crisis and we have one dumb idea that can't work that was a suggestion from the population, not even from the committee. Ae will lose potentially over 1 billion in tourism revenue and we have the Financial Secretary said if someone spends $30,000.00 and you a thousand people like that, we have $30 million. This is unbelievable. Where did they find this guy? Can we get smart people who understand economics or at least know what the word "data" means?

Why on earth are we always getting a committee stacked with incompetence and yes men/women? Can someone come up with real plans please?

Did I miss something? Isn't the US in a recession and having a huge unemployment problem? Also, why would someone pay two, three or four times.what they pay at home to go to a location where you're not guaranteed to have power during your years stay? If this was such a great idea that is an extension of something we have already, why wasn't it done before?

What is the projected income from this idea? Saying let's say a person spends $30k and we get 1,000 people then we have $30 million is nonsense. It's like saying if I have a cat and a spider, I have a new creature a cat-spider. I expect the Financial Secretary to give facts and figures, not fairytale numbers. Is he serious? This is a disgrace. Can someone with any understanding of numbers show that this was actually properly thought out and that some research was done.

I know the national average is a "D" but we shouldn't publish evidence of it.

This current situation is a complex one. The government is trying to balance the medical vs. the economic picture. A lot countries are struggling with this. We can't afford a total destruction of the economy. But, at the same time a continual rise in the infection rate will not help us economically either. The biggest issue in this pandemic besides Covid-19 itself is non-compliance. If people complied we could take the risk. But, people don't come. Them those same people complain about the situation. The government is forced to take a decision based on the actions of the idiots in the country. Bad individual decisions led to the spike. The government in it's reopening for travel added to it. If we open now the numbers will climb because some people don't listen. Sick people can't work. Businesses with sick staff have to close because other staff may have been infected. So let's say you shutdown for two weeks. Someone else gets sick, you restart that 2 week business shutdown. If the countries numbers keep increasing we get musical chairs with business shutting down for a couple of weeks because someone is infected. I don't think this works economically either. Seems worse than simply shutting down, addressing the issue and opening when we're better.

I would like the country to get back to normal soon, but unfortunately a bunch of idiots are going to plan a party and share the Covid-19 love which leads to us battling a lockdown.

An entertaining and informative piece. Let's hope.Mr
LOI isn't running the ship. I don't know the man but is he the most senior guy in the line up left? For God's don't ket it be Mr. D'Aguilar. That CNN interview wasn't a good reflection. I still can't believe he told the CNN reporter that prior to the July 1st opening we had test kits to test every visitor to the Bahamas. If I understood correct from the MOH, we only had a few thousand to cover the population. Maybe someone was flying in with a few million we didn't know about.

So, in short you think he is lying. A pickup could be valid but done in this manner suggests the business is completely open. Like I said in a prior post, a simple "Closed" sign and a locked door fixes this story. The people don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out he's lying.

trueBahamian says...

This appears to be a lie to say the least. If you have a business that is catering to people in custody, they can prepare the meals and deliver them or like another person posted, an officer or officers could go there to collect. This appears to be a clear violation that the Commissioner wants to spin as an approved business providing a needed service. Also, to further evidence it's more than likely a lie, why would members of the public be allowed in to patronized? Wouldn't the sign on the door say, "Closed" and the establishment be locked and only thr police who will pick up know that they are open for their pickup and the business will only let them in. This is very basic. If the Commissioner believes wants to continue with this story, then he should step down because either he is dishonest or incompetent.

The challenge here is the same as in other countries, people don't listen. This is a virus that we can control. The entire country suffers for the actions of a few idiots. Can we implement flogging as a deterrent for non-compliant behavior?
