God forbid that the local numbers kingpins get involved (if they aren't already) as non-traditional lenders. Then we will have a horrible situation like there was in Cuba, when the mafia controlled the hotel and gambling industries before the Revolution. If ever Christie allows his numbers boys to lend to small hotels and guesthouses, we may as well say goodbye to tourism, just as we will soon be saying goodbye to our banking industry
One can only hope that in future, other BREA members do not include Mr Smith in any discussions from which he might benefit monetarily. I would also hope that readers of this newspaper and other news outlets carrying the story remember NOT to have Mr Smith act in any real estate transactions for them, their family or their friends. The only way to hurt a person like this is in the pocketbook
If I spend $100 at the Carnival, I am not "injecting" it into the economy. It just means that I won't be spending that $100 on something else. If Johnny Foreigner spends $100, then I agree, it is new money for us. So will someone please take a proper guesstimate at the true worth of Carnival?
I'm half-serious when saying that the time has come to have a public inquiry if ever Mr Finlayson announces in the future that he intends to take over any business. This will hopefully give employees notice that they have xx number of months to find new employment opportunities.
Mr Lowe is correct to point out the capriciousness of Government's tax policy (Business license, vat, nhi). But in reality, it is not our nation's tax policy, instead it is what is dictated to us by various international agencies who are doing for the Bahamas what our leaders cannot i.e. facing the reality of our wasteful attitude towards tax revenues and spending beyond our means. If we had any political leaders with a semblance of backbone or fiscal responsibility, we would not have to introduce new taxes whenever our foreign masters click their fingers.
But how did we get into this mess in the first place? .......through the dishonesty, incompetence, nepotism and croneyism of these same political leaders. We, the taxpayers, are reaping what they have sown over the last 40 years.
The rain of the last few days is very unfortunate indeed. It means that the grassed area at Fort Charlotte is already a quagmire, and will be ruined for months to come. For many people this is the only area they can take their daily walk or exercise on. All this is before thousands of spectators will tramp through the sodden turf.
But it does raise an interesting question,,,,,,,,I wonder if any of the Carnival millions will be spent on reparation work after the event, to maybe improve the infrastructure of some of the island's tourist spots? Probably not, and all we will have is a dirty mess to remind us of the Government's latest folly
Let's pretend for a moment that he did indeed apologise (not sure he he did) Then what now ? Presumably he goes back to the social circuit in Atlanta with his reputation in tatters. Anybody who has to come into contact with him and his "wife" will know what an oaf and a political bully he is. Is this really the kind of person we want to represent us abroad? Is his family still going to live high off his expense account lifestyle and pretend that he is anything other than a bully, a liar, a croney-for-hire and a person with major anger management issues ?

Sure - why not? Just another thing on which to fritter away the VAT money.
Carnival stallholders reimbursed, MP's getting expenses bumped. That's two things so far this week.
I wonder what other waste of taxpayers' money Peril Christie will be authorising next week?
