Let's start by going after the descendants of King Ghezo of Dahomey (now Benin), who sold hundreds of thousands of his own people into slavery, together with those of neighbouring territories that he raided. It is estimated that in the 1850's King Ghezo was making the equivalent of GBP 60,000 p.a. from the slave trade, this when a "fortune" was probably something like GBP 3,000 and an annual income of GBP 500 was exceptional. It was the British who blockaded his ports in an effort to get him to stop the slave trade, but to no avail.
It was only a matter of time, and a relatively short one at that, before UBS showed the Government exactly what it thought of the arrest of one of its managers. This. added to HSBC closing in June, means there will be some $50 million less per annum in the local economy, when you take local salaries, allowances, permit income and house rentals into account. Keep up the good work Mrs Mitchell
Is this the same Mr Lightbourne who was / still is a bigwig accountant and had some perfume shops on Bay Street ? If so, then he should know better than to be a tax dodger.
I think we have reached an impasse now....the Government must know that their VAT plan simply will not work, but their pride stops them from saying anything. It is as if the two parties are going ahead with this mess, knowing that we, the people, have nowhere and nobody, to turn to. Bring on the underground, cash-only, economy with groups of people who will do their full weekly shopping in future (not just luxuries but also food, clothing, cleaning materials, medical supplies, books etc....in fact, everything) in the USA.
I made a similar comment some months ago, but please Mr. Halkitis, when is the Government going to officially issue VAT registration numbers to businesses, and have these numbers published on a website and in the local press, so that the public can know who can legally charge this pernicious stealth tax? Should I hold my breath whilst waiting........
Would this be the same Franklyn Wilson, who as recently as the Tribune's article of January 14th said that basically the private sector should not voice its concerns over VAT?? Oh, yes, it would be that same hypocrite....
Quote...."Franklyn Wilson told Tribune Business the business community was in danger of talking itself into a recession by the continuous negative “drumbeat” on the likely consequences that Value-Added Tax’s (VAT) implementation will have"
Just to continue your hilarious scenario - imagine tourists having to get to the airport 12 hours before their flights leave, so they can produce the VAT receipts, have them processed, get their B$ refund, go to the cashier desk to convert B$ to US$ (what about other, foreign currencies such as C$ GBP, Euro's) then go to the ticket counter to prepare themselves for the five security checks. Yeah, right - the golden goose will have flown long time
This whole question is now becoming embarrassingly complicated. Citizens and Permanent resident holders cannot be stopped by the police / immigration officers, according to another article in the Tribune.....however, lawyers have now said that we should carry our proof of residence at all times, to prove that we cannot be stopped for not carrying the documents we must carry. Is this a comedy sketch ?
