We do not want a politician's republic in our country. Another failed third world republic is not a bright future. Our Constitutional Monarchy system, as in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other realms, is a safeguard of our civil rights and liberties. It has a proven track record which helps bring in overseas investment. It is a stable anchor which we need to maintain.
What a wonderful editorial! Congratulations on this poignant tribute. Bahamians loved our Queen. Now let us give our support to our Queen's heir King Charles. Our new King has dedicated himself to Commonwealth issues for a very long time . We are fortunate in The Bahamas to have a democratic framework which we inherited from the U.K.
What a wonderful funeral service for our beloved Queen. It was nice to see our Governor-General and his wife and our Prime Minister on the television being taken to their prominent seats in Westminster Abbey. Another honour for our country and an acknowledgment of the high regard in which we are held by The Royal Family. Our Prime Minister was one of the very few to have had a private audience and talk with The King on Saturday. Let us keep the ties which bind us altogether and give our support to our new King .
We are very proud of our history in The Bahamas and our Constitutional Monarchy form of government. Its stability and democratic framework has served us well over the years. King Charles met only five Commonwealth Realm leaders on Saturday -his Prime Ministers of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and The Bahamas. This is a tribute to the high esteem in which our country is held by the King. Their discussions went on for some time and it was not just an in and out photo op. Let's be positive and welcome our new King. He is seriously minded and interested in helping the Commonwealth countries and has been well trained by our late Queen Elizabeth.
Our country has so many problems at the moment that the last thing we need now is a long and fractious debate about becoming a republic. This issue came out of questions to The Prime Minister. Nowhere in the PLP election manifesto was there any mention of a republic. Our governing framework now with The Crown is a solid anchor and foundation. Why change something that works? Other than a few anti-monarchists there has been no call from the public to get into another referendum. We need to address our current problems.
We do not need a republic for The Bahamas. It will not improve our lives but could well lead us down the path to becoming yet another failed third world republic.. Our current system works well here and in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other Commonwealth realms. Why abolish what works? Say NO to a politician 's republic. We have too many problems in our country right now to be wasting valuable time on an issue which is not necessary.
We should be more aware of our current system of government and the democratic inheritance we have received from the U.K. Like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other Commonwealth countries we have a freely elected Parliament, British-style courts and an impartial Governor-General above politics which is the envy of the world. There is no logical reason why we should toss all this aside and the stability which it brings to our country for a republic controlled by politicians. We do not want our Bahamas turning into yet another failed third world republic.
The Queen did her best in her long 70 year reign to help people in all the Commonwealth countries. She met many people and worked on many projects for the common good. Her reign was most remarkable. We all know there are many economic problems in our country and around the world. The Queen fulfilled her constitutional role to the best of her ability. She was a faithful Christian throughout her long life. She is now in God's loving care.
This is an interesting letter with many fine comments. We are proud of being Bahamians. We are proud of our history and the inheritance from the U.K. of our form of government. The Queen 's service to the Commonwealth for over 70 years was excellent. She was interested in all the countries and brought people of so many backgrounds together working for the common good. King Charles has been well trained for his position and is definitely a friend of The Bahamas. We will look forward to working with him in the years ahead.Meanwhile in this time of mourning we will remember our Queen and thank God for her service to us all.
