Justice should have been tempered with mercy in this matter.
The law reform commissioner Dame Anita Allen should look at this matter with a view to revising the criminal code. These penalties seem a bit harsh. She should look at making amendments and modernizing the code. Her recommendations should go to cabinet for review. The amendments then can be drafted and brought in parliament.
That is one of the primary roles of parliaments. That is to review and pass laws. However most of our MPs main job is to play cheerleader to the front bench and beat on tables.
A well known person I know ,advocated that the Bahamas have a federal Westminister system of government like Canada.
Also the country needs a strong system of local government. Some of decision making done on New Providence should have transferred to the various islands.
But Bahamians have always be resistant to progressive ideas. The politicians and the business elite like this current system. It centralizes decision making in their hands. Also they control the patronage system that underlies it.They like having their personal fiefdoms.
Politicians in the Bahamas is just make you laugh. In opposition, they point out the short-comings of the government. They campaign on promises of accountability and transparency.Once elected, they forget their promises and govern just like the government they replace.
Their rabid supporters justify their foolishness. The cycle goes on and on.
Dr.Sands is just a scape goat.Others knew what was going on and should also be held to account.
But they will get a bly because they are not a threat to the leadership.Just like in the days of Pindling.
Bahamian history is not taught much or appreciated here.
The fortieth annisveray of the sinking of the HMBS Flamingo not even mentioned in the PM's national address.Sad. Journalists here and civil society just as bad.
Bahamians don't understand or know how their system of government should work. They have mix and match pieces of the American presidential model with the Westminister model of government.
That is why they say and believe things that are wrong. The office of the prime minister is not electable. The idea of a term limit for the prime minister is just absurd in the Westminister system. The appointment of political cronies to head government departments like the acting FS Is just foolishness.Thr media here in the Bahamas is just as bad. They simply don't know how the various systems of government work and can't explain their similarities or differences.
An Englishman talking about how the Bahamas is governed, just laugh .This was several years ago in a class he was teaching at the College of the Bahamas.A relative of mine in his class told me that. He just shook his head.
He resigned to take responsibility for the breech in protocol. He is just following the Westminister model of governance. In a way,he is a scapegoat.Other persons were aware of this breech. The media here just don't do investigative journalism, they just print press statements.
His resignation does not prevent him from serving as a cabinet minister in the future.I know he will serve as cabinet minister again in the future.
There is precedent in this.Sir Winston Churchill resigned as a cabinet minister being held as a scapegoat. He came back as a minister in several ministries, ultimately becoming party leader of the Conservatives and serving as prime minister.
The government's fiscal consolidation plan was failing before both hurricane Dorian and the COV19 pandemic.
That was based on three simple things.
Increasing the vat rate from 7.50%to 12%on certain items.
Increasing the property tax rates and gaming taxes.
Those measures have failed. So they fell back to the programs that were set up by the previous financial secretary.A person with a background in economics and finance living outside the Bahamas said that to me

Cayman has done quite a number of tests for COV19. They are way ahead of us in this regard.
