Lady justice is not subject to emotions. We don't really care what the constitution permit or forbids with respect to foreign nationals especially Haitians yet we label ourselves nationalistic. Nationalism can not co-exist with anti-constitutional thinking. The very document that created the nation provides rights for those within its boarders. We should guard both the nation and the rights permitted within its boarders jealously.
The USA has about 200,000 Haitians and The Bahamas has about 50,000. Most of the Haitians living in the USA would have transition through the Bahamas. Given about 200 people per boat that works out to 1250 boat loads. My calculations don't include the thousand of Haitians who would have past away. A resignation for each boat load would have resulted in every single politician ever elected going out the door.
Regardless of what the Bahamas does, it will be blacklisted. They EU objective is to make the Bahamas totally dependent on AID from the develop world. Such nations are easier to control. From colonization to independence and back to colonization.
I find it wise to investigate what other countries are doing. In the USA the threshold is $500,000. In Canada it is $150,000 and in the Caymans it is 2.8 million. The key question, considering the above would an investor choose the Bahamas over other jurisdictions. Given the state of the Bahamian economy can we attract investors with top dollars. It is good that the government sees the need to compete for mid level entrepreneurs because the local entrepreneurs are not enough to sustain a viable economy.
When the issue was first raise I did something quite simple. I read the constitution. It clearly states in chapter 2
13. Parliament may make provision
(a) for the acquisition of citizenship of The Bahamas by persons who do not become citizens of The Bahamas by virtue of the provisions of this Chapter.
The United States and Canada are not economic powerhouses because of third and forth generation citizens but due to the influx of immigrants. America is experiencing the same problems in its school system that we are. It's about time our government see the wisdom in competing for foreign entrepreneurs.
The Haitians may be a threat to many things but not Bahamian culture. The booty-showing, pants without a belt rap stars are not Haitians. The recent video making the rounds on wasapp showing our school kids "carrying on bad" was not to Haitian music.
I think Fred Smith may be wrong on this one. The constitution states that, No person shall be deprived of his personal liberty save as may be authorized by law in any of the following cases - for the purpose of preventing the unlawful entry of that person into The Bahamas or for the purpose of effecting the expulsion, extradition or other lawful removal from the Bahamas of that person. Nevertheless, I see the wisdom of a magistrate going to the Detention center and providing a judgement for persons to be deported. The courts can not be sued but the Department of Immigration could be. All it takes is for the Department of Immigration to deport a legitimate Bahamian and that person is set for life.
