The Haitians may be a threat to many things but not Bahamian culture. The booty-showing, pants without a belt rap stars are not Haitians. The recent video making the rounds on wasapp showing our school kids "carrying on bad" was not to Haitian music.
I think Fred Smith may be wrong on this one. The constitution states that, No person shall be deprived of his personal liberty save as may be authorized by law in any of the following cases - for the purpose of preventing the unlawful entry of that person into The Bahamas or for the purpose of effecting the expulsion, extradition or other lawful removal from the Bahamas of that person. Nevertheless, I see the wisdom of a magistrate going to the Detention center and providing a judgement for persons to be deported. The courts can not be sued but the Department of Immigration could be. All it takes is for the Department of Immigration to deport a legitimate Bahamian and that person is set for life.
What puzzles me is our inability to keep criminals in jail. Why don't the Attorney General do what the United States does. Prosecute them for a lesser crime until their murder trial comes up. For instance, prosecute them for gun possession which carries about 10 years and they now have all the time to wait until their murder trial comes up.
Having serve in the public service the system is broken. Promotions take far too long. Promotion starts with departments head, then to the Public Service, then onto the Public Service Commission, then financial approval at the Ministry of Finance, then to the Governor General. It then makes it way all the way down so that everyone can update their records. It takes about two and a half years provided that your files don't get lost. In the main time you are most likely working the position you are been promoted to. I witness the frustration of a Cabinet Minister when he couldn't break through the iron clad bureaucracy of the Public Service.
Citizenship without the right to vote is a good one. LOL. How many generations do you go back. I hope you don't include the Potiers, Moncurs, Deveaux, Deleveaux. You probably end up with 10% of the population eligible to vote.
It's obvious that some of the remarks here indicates a "personal axe to grind" regarding Mr. Greenslade. Crime is the result of social decay and it is ludicrous to place it at the feet of any particular commissioner. Greenslade was appointed by the FNM and continued to perform his duties under the PLP. It's obvious that the Minister of National Security wanted revenge and took full advantage of his "Brutus inclination".
The Tribune knows exactly how to stroke passions. They went into those areas with the headline and article already written and needed some fool to help them filled in the blanks. Why couldn't the headline read, "Haitians concern about children not going to school" . Nooo! that headline will be too positive for such a people.
