I'm never sure on this whole income tax argument. Mainly as people just say we need income tax as though thats the answer without saying at what rate and on what amount. For it to work we would no doubt need a much larger Inland Revenue department, which would cost a lot. How would this cost compare to what is brought in. Its easy to say just tax the millionaires, but that won't bring in enough, so i am sure it would be down at around $20-25,000 and over, which means the middle class would yet again get slammed. The real rich can just work out ways around it (dividends, leave the country and so on), so as always its the middle class. As a novel idea and before any taxes are increased on anything, how about the Government cut its expenditure? But i highly doubt that, we seem to be a country that thinks we can tax ourselves out of debt and do not care what wastage goes on. We are all about to be taxed again for BPL's failures, and not 1 person has been held to account for this and they never will, so i expect no change until collapse over here.
I think the $7.44 million is what the Government has been given. The US alone spent more then this, however that will be via US Aid, Coast Guard, US Customs etc etc. Money given to other charities would not be included in the $7.4 million.
And this is the problem. There is no political will to make the hard decision to downsize government instead there is a hope that we will somehow grow out of our problems. All the while are debt grows and we become more and more inefficient. We will not grow out of our problems, and the Government is at the limits of what they can tax the people, so this only leaves two other options. One cut Government expenditure (include laying people off) or two borrow the shortfall. Doing two just puts the inevitable collapse off for a while, but doesn't get rid of it.
And not 1 person went to jail for gross mismanagement. In fact all are still employed and looked after. 1 day the true details will come out and those who walk around as though they are great will be shown for what they are. Unfortunately it will take our collapse and a change in mindset of us for this to happen.
When VAT was being introduced either John Rolle or Ishamel Lightbourne said we were close to being broke and there was only 3 options. 1) Increase Taxes, 2) Cut Government Expenditure and 3) a mixture of both. Whoever it was said there was no political will to cut expenditure. Nothing has changed and as such i fully expect this to be bankrupt nation in the near future. So thanks Pindling (not as much as the rest as the deficit really kicked in after he was in power), Ingraham, Christie and now Minnis, you lot have helped destroy us.
They have been telling the public for longer then 6 months that this was coming in. As usual its only when you get close that people start to make noise. It is right to do and needs to happen. This is like the recent traffic laws, everyone saying they weren't informed they are no longer allowed to use their cell phones whilst driving, butt somehow they magically know they can turn left on red.
AS always if it isn't the Government making things worse it is the Unions. The vested interests in this country to keep things the same instead of modernizing the country for the benefit of all is outstanding. If the Minister really wants to deal with this just tell the Taxi union that either they accept you can't lease the plates or Uber and all companies like that will be OK in this country.
With technology the way it is you don't need such a large department to do the work they do. Downsize it to a 5-10 man team and have the newscasters in nassau do the reporting etc. As this idea will save money it will be ignored and they will build a new $40 million building with 10 elevators so the staff will never have to walk up the stairs.
