Should be up to the people who live in South Eleuthera to decide. I live in Nassau and it is gone and will never be the same as it was when i was a kid (when going out West was like going to the family islands and most roads you could move on except Palmdale). However this does means that we have a fairly good economy etc.
We all know what needs to happen, and we all know what won't happen. This has been said every year for a long time and still no change. Why? Because we keep electing these worthless politicians.
Not sure where the link is but search for Disney in Guana Cay, where they left the island a mess, leaving everything to decay. They had called it Treasure Island
The government should just have a vote on whether people want Government corporations to turn the water off / power off / charge a profitable amount for flights / receive payment for mortgages or not/ real property tax etc. If the people say no they don't want to have to pay that also let them know VAT will have to go to 30% to pay for this. Simple. If everyone paid what is owed (in particular those connected who can afford it) then we would be no where near the mess we are in.
Will be fun to watch Munroe win this one. All that will do is make it harder for all to get a mortgage to buy a house as the banks will want more security to ensure what Munroe is trying to make happen not happen. The last thing the bank wants is to take the homes away (they would always rather the payments are made), but they have to because if they don't everyone will stop paying.
Well we shall wait and see whether this is the normal, all talk and no action from Government after a tragedy. A tragedy that could have been avoided had everyone done their job. There have been countless deaths and serious injuries over the years to both tourist and Bahamians due to our lackadaisical attitude, and no punishment should you be found out, after which whoever was in power would say some grandiose words about things changing and then nothing would change. Hope i am wrong but the realist in me doesn't think anything will change.
And watch nothing will change, and no one punished unless they are sued by the tourists. Will be interesting to see if they have would have a case against the Bahamas Government in a US court due to the lack of enforcement of the laws by our Government . If they do maybe we would eventually see some will in enforcing the laws over here.
Because we allowed our leaders to give themselves and their people so much we are now having to give these things to others. We are broke, and this areas need to have a lot of money put into it that the Government does no have. As such they have no choice but to get the private sector to do it. The hope would be that the private sector would increase the money Government gets and also provide a cleaner more well run area. +
