Condolences to the families involved, however yet again all we hear from the authorities is all talk when these things happen but nothing will change. Enforce all the laws. I am tired of having to slam on my brakes when i go on a green light because someone feels then can run through a red with impunity. If a person runs someone over and leaves the scene they should be charged with murder, and not a disgraceful $10,000 fine. Also, and even though i like doing it, bring in a ban on drink driving and using a cell phone while driving. And then actually enforce it, which i know is very hard as we seem to think that passing laws will work even if we don't enforce them.
You can mandate all you want, until the powers that be enforce the penalties for not adhering to the mandates nothing will change. Still waiting to hear of a single MP being punished for not doing their disclosure. The fact of the matter is we all know that when the PLP was in power there were plenty fake contracts and over priced contract given to cronies. We all also know that this will continue with the FNM. All we hope for is that it is at a lesser rate then it became, as there is little hope of us Bahamians holding the political class to account before a collapse happens. After it happens is another matter.
Even if they do the courts don't give any real punishment. A short while ago a lady in an uninsured and unlicensed car killed a pedestrian and was given a $10,000 fine. It seems if you wanted to kill someone use a car and you won't really be punished.
If they ever build the promenade they should put statues every so often with a plaque saying what the person did. If at the Fort then on the top of the hill so they are overlooking the island and people will go and see. To put it in the back of the Botanical Gardens would mean no one sees them
I do agree that there are plenty Bahamians who are educated enough (and more) to do the work RBC said they were having a struggle finding people for. However this hides another issue we are facing, and that is these younger people are going off to study in the US and Canada and not coming back. Meaning that from the employment pool available RBC is having trouble finding the correctly qualified people. Of course an argument could be made that if they paid more, these qualified people would come back. A number of those left are in the boat that he was talking about and which we as a country need to solve. His other point about having a credit bureau I think is correct. Not sure what else he talked about.
Has no one thought that maybe he knew his retirement was coming up before he spoke. He therefore decided he could say what he felt were the true issues facing this country and it wouldn't matter. As it is, instead of us showing him that he is either wrong and proving it, or he is right and we should change, we decide to foam at the mouth in righteous indignation and do nothing. All while we complain about our wages stagnating and the economy hardly growing and praying that something might change, but if it does we scream that we don't want XYZ to change.
Condolences to the family. Unfortunately until we as a nation either enforce the health and safety laws of the country or enact ones and then enforce them, these industrial accidents will continue to happen. Too often i have driven past construction sites and seen people 2-4 stories high with no safety equipment on, which is an accident waiting to happen.
If you were able to lodge complaints to the tax man and be dealt with in a efficient manner people would not feel the need to go to the press or MP's. However as it is, you can make your complaint and then not hear anything except pay. Until this changes people will always go to the press or MP's if that is the only way of getting a response.
