Greenslade cannot possibly be serious? 100 pages plus of complaint is somehow not an official complaint? Investigate the complaint, or are you all too incompetent to do that?
As a Bahamian, I think the guide regulations are idiotic -- even Bahamian registered boats must have a guide if more than one person on board. It's ludicrous! Well done, Bahamas government, not only have you managed to get us downgraded to junk status, but you've also killed off a large segment of the tourism industry. Did you even stop to think how much these valuable visitors bring to the Bahamas by using hotels, restaurants, rental cars, etc.?
No one is complaining about having to get a license - in fact, that's pretty standard around the world. But the mandatory guide part is clearly intended as special interest and only benefits a few guides!
In fact, why doesn't the government spend some energy in enforcing the law as it sits. For years now, despite many complaints, local Bahamians have been netting bonefish on the flats to use for food or bait. This has long been illegal in the Bahamas, yet no one gives a damn about this. We're all too quick to blame the foreigners for our troubles, but I think we need to take a hard look at ourselves before we start pointing fingers.
There are reports that people are being bused in and being paid to attend the PLP march. Is this true? (This is not a Majority Rule day march - let's call it what it really is)
And you cannot possibly be serious to lump the WeMarch group in with the Majority Rule day event? These are TWO very different events -- one is for REAL equality and protesting against BAD government and the other is a PLP march -- which is why we have so many problems in our country to begin with!
“you only could break one damn bottle upside their head”.
Is Mr. Miller suggesting the use of violence against the march organizer and the participants? Surely an MP would be more responsible in his speech without giving the impression that he would like for PLP supporters to resort to violence. Or perhaps that's exactly what he's saying.
So when the "persuasion" of gang members to stop the march didn't work, Leslie suggests using a bottle upside his head? What kind of country are we living in? All the more reason to march.
1. Who is going to be enforcing this? And for Bahamians and foreigners alike? 2. Does anyone actually think the funds for a so-called conservation fund will be properly managed and used for the purpose intended? 3. In this day and age, why can't we simply buy and print out fly fishing licenses online? Think how this will work in the out islands especially -- having to go to a local commisioner's office (which is either at the other end of the island or closed, or both) then having to find some official to stamp it for you. This could be made so much simpler! 4. Do people who are experienced fly fisherman (many who have far more expertise than many of our local guides) really need to hire a guide? And just because there are more than one person in the boat (it's dangerous to go out alone anyhow) 5. I'm all for protecting Bahamian jobs, but some of these provisions are idiotic. 6. Fine with insisting on a guide for foreign registered boats. But is there no way of permitting 2nd homeowners to register their boats int he Bahamas (we get the stamp tax and other fees) so they can fish without a guide? 7. If they are not going to pursue an online licensing option, then will they at least allow the various fishing lodges and hotels to issue them? 8. In the spirit of this conservation goal, does the government plan to crack down on the many Bahamians who use nets to scoop up many juvenile bonefish on the flats to use for bait? There's a huge conservation issue right there that does far more damage than a few Americans without guides in their boat.
Why do we buy boats for the RBDF to keep wrecking? How many boats is this now they've managed to run aground or run into things? In the harbour no less. Total banana republic.
Injured marines is never good, but this could have been prevented. Even with a hydraulic failure, there is absolutely no reason why this could not have been prevented. Ships of this size (and cost) always have backup hydraulic systems, so what happened to the backup systems? Let's give them a few old haitian sloops to practice on before they get these brand new expensive ships to play with and keep destroying.
