Full of sound and fury but signifying nothing. Nothing but hot air, pandering to a mass of rabid anti- Haitian Bahamians. This government will do nothing to deal with our illegal immigration problem.
So calm down everyone, you are only getting your blood pressure up for nothing. LOL.
URCA is a disgrace. It is independent in name only, but it is beholden to carrying out the wishes of the government and by extension government corporations like BPL. In doing so it severely restricts the ability of Bahamians to be energy independent and wants to have us enslaved to expensive, dirty energy from BPL forever. It’s policies put lie to the government’s stated goal to foster renewable energy and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. It is a sham.
For example I want to put in a solar system to cover my entire energy use for my home in Long Island but I am so severely restricted in the size of my system that I can at best cover 40% with the maximum allowable system. Why is this? You would think they would welcome persons producing clean energy, cutting down on the barrels of polluting oil imported to our island. The reason is they want to protect BPL and its revenues and the good of the country and the environment be damned. URCA is a perversion of what they were created to be.
Moncurcool is correct. After Matthew GBPC spent extra to buy poles that can withstand much higher wind speeds and these fared well in Dorian. I am sure they will replace all the damaged poles from Dorian with the same improved quality. Sadly this company was allowed to buy out all Bahamian shareholders at a below fair value price. The govt should be ashamed to have allowed Emera to do this.
We don’t know, just that they were “impacted”. Could mean they are undergoing treatment or could mean they have died. I wish the minister would clarify because the rumor mill on social media is going wild.😜
My own pet theory is that the goat will pull through. They are tough. Would the tribune please follow up so we can get to the bottom of this.
Kudos to Focol for being a great corporate citizen and ensuring fuel is available for the rebuild in Abaco and Grand Bahama as quickly as possible. Focol is a Bahamian company with thousands of Bahamian shareholders unlike the other fuel companies that are foreign owned and refuse to offer Bahamians an opportunity to invest and benefit from the profits made in their own country. Think about that the next time you pull into a gas station.
Lots. Do not build in flood prone areas or right on the shoreline. Stricter building codes that new structures must be a certain elevation above sea level. Build shelters that can withstand 200+ mph winds. Will be expensive so let shelters be dual purpose e.g. the new schools should be built to this standard so will not have to rebuild after these storms and they could double as shelters that will not fail. Plan properly, pre position assets before storm etc. The list is endless of how we can defend against these storms.
Speaking of defenseless. Can we have completely new leadership for our defense force? The commodore needs to be relieved of duty. We spent a quarter of a billion dollars on boats, two of which have already been run arground. The British navy made their way to abaco before the defense force did. How is this possible? Well they tracked the storm and had a ship on its way from Jamaica to enter abaco as soon as possible. We should have done that.
Instead we were late as usual leading to unnessary looting and lawlessness. Then the defense force brags that on Friday sept 6, 5days after the storm they had 250 members in abaco and Grand Bahama combined. This out of a force of 1600 members. No planning, terrible logistics amounts to failed leadership. We can not be business as usual in these times. We deserve better. The commodore and defense force leadership has to go.
Amen. This storm is bringing to the surface the latent xenophobia that so many Bahamians have. It’s vileness and viciousness is quite surprising, I always knew it was there but it is deep seeded and terrible. Apparently it makes some people feel better about themselves when the falsely denigrate others, the irony is in the process these hateful people are only demeaning themselves.
I live in Long Island and as I have mentioned before there are no Haitians here legal or otherwise as far as I know. Just this morning I cleaned up used condom wrappers presumably thrown from a car in front of my property. It is a daily occurrence to pick up discarded bottles and cans. The sides of our roads are littered. Truth is we have very nasty Bahamians as well and this one can not be blamed on the Haitians.

Absolutely, I hope people heed the warnings to evacuate next time. If we do not learn from Dorian we never will.
