There is no doubt that Minister KPT has taken the high road in his efforts to save the Bahamian economy. No one likes to take medicine (4.5% increase in Vat and reducing the size of government), but the Minister of Finance was right to give it to the Bahamian economy or we would have been in the IMF "ICU" a year or so ago.
Well done KPT. I still don't like the taste of the extra 4.5% Vat, but I understand why I have to take it.
Tal, I am familiar with the 1975 situation. The GG, who we know is appointed by the Australian government was the one who took the action. This was done on the advice of Australian legal and political experts. Queen Liz was, no doubt notified of what had been decided.
Tal, with respect, under the Constitution, the Queen sits in her capacity as Queen of The Bahamas an independent nation only. She is also Queen of Canada.
Her position as Queen is the same as you being a director or president of several different companies, yet none are related.
But for the increase in the VAT this probably would be the case. But it is not going to happen just now and, if he can stabilize the finances of Government over the next year or two, it won't.
It was well known in, international circles, that had the PLP won in 2017 the Bahamian Dollar would have been devalued by 30% to 40% within six months. Maybe this devaluation comment came as a result of someone referring to that.
