Scary what some of the young people are being exposed to. And while it is the intention of some to get totally wasted, some do not know the effects of drugs until after taking them. Drugs and alcohol interfere both with one's ability to learn and the capacity to retain knowledge. And younger people stand a higher risk of brain damage, drug dependency and other medical problems. The fact of the matter is that whilst they are a nuisance to many, most of the roadside mechanics cannot afford to go through the costly and burdensome routine of building a mechanic shop, getting it licensed then having to pay the overhead of running the operation. Most of these side street garages pop up up when a person becomes popular because he does good work or has no job and tries to keep a little income flowing. Some take on the difficult work that the licensed shop refuse and so the cars pile up . Is it right? NO not to the residents of the area. Hopefully mechanic shops can become like barbershops where qualified persons can rent out a booth (bay) to do his work. Then sometimes the licensed shops have just as many vehicles parked along the streets as the Bush mechanic. Then this, too must be regulated.
To be honest many a young person do not know about a post office. They have never received anything in the mail or never have they posted a letter. Even a fax machine is obsolete to them..not to mention a typewriter. They know hoe to send and receive emails or to go to XpressIt to receive goods purchased online. The point? The post office is becoming an obsolete entity, but there is ways for it to reinvent itself and become a relevant place again. But it has to modernize, it has to offer more essential services and it must be easily and conveniently accessible. Putting a post office in the mall may not contribute to this goal. And the situation is not one that should be politically driven or besmirched with greed.
I should not dIgnify your post with a response but what part of the Web Shop business is corrupt racketeering? Not unlike any casino business? Admit it, you hate to see anything Bahamian successful. And worse for a company of Black Bahamians...but its the people's time!
Sounds really dumb! Extremely absurd! Ignorant even! If you break diplomatic ties with a country whose residents are invading your boarders then what do you do with the (illegal) immigrants? What much else does The Bahamas have to offer Haiti, except as a refuge for migrants fleeing that country and/or a transit for those wanting to go on to the USA or Canada? So how will breaking diplomatic ties with that impoverished country hurt them or benefit us? (i'll wait). So now you want to shut the door on diplomacy meaning that those Haitians who come here cannot be returned. ***SMT***
Maybe the government needs to take notes form the so called Sebas Cartel. Well organized, good planning, controls and forward thinking has lead to the profitability and success. despite what the haters say. better to leave gambling private than to have government meddle with it and get brown nosed.
The most difficult illegal immigrants are those who work in the 'sweat shops' or as modern slaves and are least mobile. These include Haitians. Jamaicans, Chinese, Filipinos, Cubans, Panaminans and others. They arrive into the country and are sent to their 'plantation', be it a house in Lyford Cay, a restaurant kitchen, the store room of a food store or wherever. They barely surface socially and their 'masters' have ways of avoiding immigration raids. They are usually only uncovered when someone decides to 'pimp them off', or when their employer (master) gets done or fed up with them and calls immigration to give them a free ride home.
If someone hands you a bag of money and says go in it and pick out all the $1, $5, and $10.00 notes and they should total $150 million. That is your hurricane relief money. The money the government borrowed specifically for that purpose. So you pick out the notes, as instructed but they only total $108 million. So your hurricane relief money is short. It doesn't mean that that the money isn't there or that it has been stolen outright. It just wasn't used on hurricane relief. So you start to dig in the bag some more separating and counting the $20 notes, the $50 notes and the $100 notes. But you do not find anymore $5, $1 or $10 notes. So you can confidently conclude that the full $150 million was not spent on hurricane relief and since it is no longer there it must have been spent on something else. Like try to buy an election. The McCartney guy sounded so silly on the radio yesterday trying to rip into and discredit the minister of finance because he did not grasp what the man was trying to say. Then you must wonder why McCartney became so sensitive and defensive about talks of money 'walking out the treasury.' His words.
Then the question is how much money did government spend on the Independent Shopping Center in preparation for making it the new post office. The building has been both stripped and gutted. But work has come to a stand still. The ruminate that government has found another site. Did government purchase the property? Then what will be done with it? Remember the old City Market building on Market Street? Government purchased that property many years ago. Worked began on it and then stopped. This is the third or fourth change in government but yet the property sits idle. The people's money wasted. But yet citizens are being choked for more taxes.
