There must be more benefits to living in the Bahamas than being a maid in some foreign hotel or a taxi driver . But this government seems hell bent on foreignising everything and shipping all the (financial) benefits out the country. This policy is wose than that of pre 1960's. At least back then there was limited skilled manpower. Bahamians need to be careful that the only thing left for them after all this is the flag.

BTC has downsized at least a dozen times since being taken over (handed to on a silver platter) by Cable and Wireless, but yet the employee numbers keep creeping back up. The business module these (foreign) companies try to use in the Bahamas do not take into account that being an island nation a company like BEC and BTC are actually 35 smaller companies operating as one so there will be an increase in employees. That doesn't apply for the Airport Management. Also most people don't realize that most of the cost increases that were used to make NAD successful were passed on to Bahamians and not tourists. Parking, for example, tripled, and most persons who work at the airport can no longer afford to but lunch there and many of the domestic operators have found their operating costs climb through the roof. I am still convinced that BTC was using dropped calls to subsidize its income. (when you have to call a person back 5 times to complete one conversation, that call ends up costing $1.50 as opposed to 60 cents.) It will be interesting to see what happens with BEC. PowerSecure is walking into a company that is presently charging its consumers three times what the price of electricity should be, but yet BEC has a $450 million debt. The trick is how do you bring this debt down while reducing the cost of electricity at the same time : Hint take politics and excessive union demands out the mix. Then diversify and upgrade your equipment.

The average Bahamian only puts minutes on his/her phone when they need to make a call because they feel that BTC's charges are too expensive. And even then they only put enough minutes to complete the call. Others use data to use the Wats App for communicating. Even then many complain that the data package that is suppose to last a month only lasts a few days. Even consumers who have post paid data packages complain they no longer last the full month. Some say at first they never ran out of data, then the data started running out a few days before the end of the month. Now just two weeks into the month and they get messages saying the data has been used up. When C&W took over BTC they forced many electronic stores out of businesses because these stores could not compete with BTC's phone prices. That seems to be changing now as smaller phone manufacturers are putting phones on the market at prices and with features that allow the small independent retailers to compete with the phone giants again. Of course BTC's revenue dropped as the number od dropped calls dropped. When a customer had to redial a number four and five times to complete a call, that was additional revenue in BTC's pockets. So where exactly is BTC's niche market? Have the company gone full circle after spending hundreds of millions of dollars only to say that the service cannot be improved?

get use to it: at least 55 more people will die in the Bahamas this year because of murder. Most of them will be Bahamian males between the age of 18 and 27 years. Most of them will die in a hail of bullets, while others, like this man will be stabbed to death, by someone known to him. Only around 60 percent of the persons killed will have someone charged with causing their death while less than 10 percent of persons charged will be convicted and receive a jail sentence. Most of the murders will occur in the areas of Bain and Grants Town, Nassau Village, pinewood and yes Potters Cay is becoming a hot spot for killing. No the persons who will be murdered have not yet been named or identified, but persons involved in crime, the sale of drugs or gang activity are at a greater risk. Any male that goes to a night club and gets into an argument over a female is at extremely high risk. And yes chances are that someone will be killed while playing dominoes or after being recently released from prison. And yes, the person least likely to get murdered in the Bahamas is a white female of any age. Any questions?

Ok one more quote to confirm that the demise of Eleuthera happened *before* Ingraham's time as PM : "The island was quite prosperous in the period from 1950 to 1980, attracting several prominent American industrialists such as Arthur Vining Davis, Henry J. Kaiser, and Juan Trippe. Frequent visitors included movie stars like Robert De Niro as well as the Prince of Wales and a pregnant Princess of Wales.
**Due to changes in foreign-ownership policy**, with the Bahamas becoming independent in 1973, **all** (*how many?*) of the large resorts and agricultural businesses were abandoned or **compelled to be sold to government-favored Bahamian interests**.(*who were they sold to?*) Because of the strain of a newly forming country, and unfavorable changes in US tax law, some businesses failed during the period from 1980 to 1985.

John says...

The popular slogan in South Eleuthera back then was, *"Don't be stupid, vote George Baker, if you don't wann cry when the well runs dry,"* Go read for yourself and send the chronic liar (Wilson) a copy: http://www.eleutheranews.com/permalink/…. my case is closed (for now).

There is a lot more to be told about South Eleuthera and what happened to it under the PLP and even before Hubert Ingraham became leader of the FNM if Franky Wilson needs to be reminded:
Did you know that South Eleuthera had the largest, fastest growing and most advanced economies of any Family Island, with the exception of Grand Bahama prior to the PLP's interferance and them intentionally killing it?
Did you know that Bahamasair, under the chairmanship of Phillip Bethel was used to provide employment to PLP supporters of Eleuthera? It is alleged that employee numbers more than doubled under Bethell's chairmanship.
The question of double voting arose because of Bahamasair's employment because even though these Eleuthera natives were stationed in New Providence or other parts of the Bahamas, they were jetted back to Eleuthera on election day to vote.
The PLP caused family feuds on the island by providing jobs and services to their supporters but not to other members of the same family, some who chose to remain loyal to the developers of that island.
The government was forced to buy the Rock Sound airport after the developers of South Eleuthera left or became inactive. Cattle from a nearby (abandoned) farm started to wander onto the runway and hat to be contained.
There was a military base in Eleuthera that provided employment for locals that also closed during this time of hardship.

The developers of South Eleuthera did not wait for government to put in infrastructure. They put in roads and South Eleuthera was the only island in the Bahamas that had storm drains, with the exception of New Providence as far back as the 1960's. Whenever there was a disasater like a hurricane the developers, assisted by locals, would clear the roads and render assistance to residents even before government workers could get to the island There was no defence force boats back then..This spirit still exists in Eleuthera today.
There was over employment in South Eleuthera, meaning many people had more than one job. There was Cotton Bay, winding Bay, Cape, The Rock Sound Club and many people who had vacation homes that provided jobs. This was forcefully brought to an end under the Pindling led PLP.

So when all is said and done, the PLP owes the people of South Eleuthera and the entire island of Eleuthera more than forty years of economic growth and prosperiety it killed dead out of spite and victimization. Franky needs to stop talking fool and get to work. Is it payback time yet?
