the sky is falling!!! Some may remember back when 'they' claimed there was a gas shortage and so 'they' started rationing gas. Lines at the pumps stretched, sometimes, for miles in the US and it was not unusual for many stations here to close because they ran out of fuel. In fact many service stations in the US implemented an 'odd even" plan, where motorist could only buy gas on certain days depending if their license plate ended in an even or odd number. The point is there was NO gas shortage, it was something created by 'them.'' But by the time you towed the line at the service station you were so happy to get gas, you did not worry that the price jumped up from a dollar plus to eventually over $5.00 a gallon. (the US went from under $1.00 to over $4.00 a gallon). Now can you see that is the same game they are playing with us at BEC? Never mind you are paying FOUR times more for electricity than what it should be, but they make it in short supply. They make you so happy when the power stays on you forget how much they are ripping you off with the price. In fact even the previous government and this one try to make you feel guilty when you don't pay your light bill on time. They juicing you still!

It is that attitude that has us sitting in the dark as we speak. The power rests with the people. We only get what we demand. If we stop seeing the BEC problem as an FNM issue or a PLP issue but s national issue and stand united and demand it be fixed then it will happen. Same thing for crime, murder especially.

Every Bahamian should be offended by the slipper dragging approach this government is taking to the power woes in this country. While Leslie Miller seems to want to make something happen. The rest of the government, including cabinet seems to be giving this problem a low priority. How many millions were lost by local companies last summer due to power outages. And how much do they stand to lose this year? How insulted should you be when your tax collecting government can bring in trailer loads of generators for their carnival event ? How offensive is it when the chairman of BEC bells you to be prepared to sweat and grope in the dark during the relays because we can't afford no blackout at that event

This sorry a$$ problem with BEC is not new and it is a strong indictment on everyone Bahamian who has allowed the problem to drag on for so long. Many can remember as children growing up those long hot summers when the power was off due to some problems with BEC power or there was some industrial action going on with BEC Union. It was not unusual to look up East a Street and see the orange glow of power lines on fire or to look down Market Street and see sparks coming from light poles and watch wires burn and fall to the ground. Transformers exploded in the middle of the night sending communities into panic and forcing many to avoid the streets and use back yard track roads instead. A lot of these problems were fixed in the 1970's when BEC not only installed new generation plants but also new transmission lines. But when you have a strong union that ensures its membership is overpaid and overcompensated for its labour and when a company tries to operate when about 10% of its product (electricity) is being stolen and about another 20% of its electricity is not being paid for then serious financial will develop. Add to this you have fuel inefficient equipment that send fuel bills through the roof. Welcome to BEC 2015 : a cash strapped crisis management company still with an overbearing Union and antiquated equipment that is failing miserably and adding to the misery level of all New Providence residents. The problem is not going away by itself and the longer it takes to get fixed the bigger the problem will grow. Total failure is a possibility. BEC needs a cash injection to purchase new equipment. Fuel efficient. It must harness this runaway Union and it must protect its revenue. There has to be an ongoing plan for capital growth and plant replenishment, otherwise it will find itself in this same position in 5 years. But the first step is that BEC. Must stabilize its power supply and control and reduce its labor and fuel costs. A company cannot be producing at its near maximum capacity and not realizing a profit. You don't need a foreign consultant to tell you that. Stop juicing Bahamians.

This here is so racists : Are you saying that only white folk have the power to tell good governance? Perry Christie's biggest problem is he panders too much to cronyism. If he appoints some sensible, educated, business thinking (black and white) Bahamians to some of these boards maybe the country can advance forward, a little bit.

You are so on the money. But not only does it tell us about management, it also tells us about the excessive power BEC union has in New Providence. When last have you heard of industrial actions at BEC on the family islands. That's because most family island workers are part of the community before they are a member of the union. Their loyality is to their community first. In New Providence the union is about getting more pay, working less hours, getting more benefits and challenging anyone to stop them. No wonder we have a financially crippled BEC that is producing power to its maximum and still not making a profit..just like Bahamasair, ZNS, Water and Sewerage, BoB, shall we add Bamsi now or later today?

Every time Hubert Minnis opens his mouth of recent he seems to be giving persons more reasons not to support his party. Why is he spending so much time trying to poke holes in the PLP government and that party. Give those who do not support this government and their party a strong alternative. Give them an option to vote differently, Persons do not want another five years (after 2017) of hearing about what this (PLP) government did while they were in power or how bad a shape they left the country in. Give them an alternative (party) to vote for and they will. The constant *itching ain't cutting it.

Some people still think that these black- outs, at least some of them are because of the friction between Leslie Miller and BEC. But if you recall in the latter part of the FNM's term in office BEC's workers were coming around in the middle of a black-out and disconnecting your service. You only realized you were off when everyone's else's power came back on and yours didn't.

If this government wanted to they could fix the BEC problem. But they seem to want to let it drag on until someone is killed or seriously injured with the power going off and on like a Christmas tree. And the FNM did not fare any better than the present government because they seem to employ stop-gap measures rather than finding a long term fix. Apparently one of their 'tricks' was to disconnect overdue customers when the load got too heavy, Remember those days when they would come around and disconnect you every two weeks. some persons got so faustrated they decided to leave their power off and learnt to live in the dark and the heat of the night. Some six thousand bahamian families. a number of business had to shut down because the lights being shut off every two weeks killed their business. NOW even the customer paying on time can't get no light. Even as the dump still burns!
