I don’t think there’s a creole word for “thank you”, because they certainly don’t say it. The shelters are mostly Haitian occupied. And like Mr. Jean they have shelter, food, clothing. But all I’ve heard from them, and their leaders, in the international press are complaints as if they’re being denied water and other essentials.

This is how it should work...no documents, no entry. Going against this is the root cause of the shanty town catastrophe.

Im not surprised that you are again speaking from misinformation. Now your ignorance has led you to "know" the mindset of Bahamians. In reality, there was a special push to get Haitians out of their shanty town communities into shelters. It's the "humanity" of Fred Smith and illegal employers that are to blame for the shanty town fatalities. These individuals should have been deported or made to follow the laws with regard to land and building codes.

Instead of continuing in ignorance, take this warning to the many Trench town and Shanty town residents in Jamaica.

I've asked several times, with no answer. But I'll ask again: why is the biggest crisis the Bahamas has ever faced being centered around Haitians? Next this man will demand an accounting of all aid received, and that a percentage be allocated to illegal Haitians.

After the outpouring has stopped, sympathy has worn off-the two, three extended family groups in Nassau and US will not coexist in harmony. And it is not a practical expectation. Bahamians and Haitians affected by Dorian are literally in the same boat in terms of loss. Haitians with legal status should receive same assistance as any other. Illegal Haitians should not be considered beyond housing at CRDC and a ticket to Haiti.

Only 50 deaths as of Sept 10, is absurd. At this point the government needs to give actual numbers...not simply whose been identified. There are pictures circulating on social media about mass burials. Why is this not officially relayed to the public? Considering the length of time that has passed, I could see the neccessity for burying fatalities. Identified of not, they should be counted.

I completely agree with deceased’s father. The people causing the chaos are the ones who are not truly grieving and will forget him in a few months. I hope the troublemakers are identified, expelled and face legal consequences for their actions. They are almost adults and will be carrying this violent mentality into the real world...nobody needs to make excuses for them including the grieving mother. With their bias almost any comment made by the teacher not blaming herself would be “insensitive” and its no excuse.

It actually fits you...personal insults in lieu of logical conversation is not a trait of a mature person of average intelligence.

I agree with this...if citizenship is almost automatic for the children of illegal immigrants. The children born abroad to Bahamian parents should have the opportunity for dual citizenship; and so should their children if they opt for dual citizenship. They could be the skilled labor force, and innovative entrepreneurs the country is lacking. This might be the only way to counter the massess of uneducated, unskilled labor which also makes up the fastest growing population in the country.

My2centz says...

You once said you saw firsthand the devastating impact of illegal immigration on public services. But your solution is to provide an added incentive and add hundreds of thousands more poor undecated Haitians into the mix? Does that sound rational to you? I think youre the one speaking from emotion here. If we want to pretend to be humanitarians, then show some concern for all people concerned, not just Haitains. Birthright citizenship for a country as small, and struggling, as The Bahamas is not beneficial to the Bahamas in any way. Even the US and Canada are seeking to step away from this. To suggest this, shows no genuine concern for Bahamas or the poor Bahamians.

If the friend knew same day, its likely from his next of kin(who is not the US based sister). So the family was notified. Her only qualm is why the body is still being held, five weeks is a long time for a natural death.
