Excellent commentary. Last name listed, should be "Joe" Spence. Why are these stories not taught in every school in The Bahamas? Nor their music? Why do we place so little emphasis on education here? These stories, along with the history of Red Bays, are essential lore at the core of Bahamian and Andros history. Soon, all will these memories will be lost. Do we care?
Not surprising. If we don't care about our vulnerable people, why would we care about our vulnerable natural resources? A lot of people are paid to do absolutely nothing in this country. A government job is a handout for those who have no work ethic. We simply don't care. Period.
Sadly, the so-called experts continue to place the blame on the individual affected, rather than seeing these problems as rising rates of symptoms of a truly unhealthy society. When these kids realize that there is little to no truth, morality, help, nor opportunity available to them in the short and long term, this turn towards substance abuse, depression and other self destructive behaviour becomes apparent. Bottom line is that it is not the kids who are manifesting the root of the problem. It is us who have allowed our society to be taken over by truly rotten politicians, pastors and police who hold sway in creating the horrible social conditions extant today, especially in The Bahamas. Do we also think that the out of control rates of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer, and other NCD's are due entirely to lifestyle choices? These are all evidence of a very sick society. Very sick. Any society that places so little emphasis on educational outcomes, yielding an overwhelmingly uneducated and emotionally adolescent population that is capable of rallying around the present PLP government, a political party rife with corruption and deceit, will continue to see never ending and escalating failures on a national level. And, to be honest, these social ills will only become worse as the realities of our fiscal situation becomes more evident and evolves, and the kleptomaniac psychopaths continue to occupy the halls of government, our churches and our national security apparatus, as they presently do.
Banking, as we know it today, is a criminal enterprise. The idea that there is a such thing as a rich banker is ludicrous. Financial expert? Please! Will there be country for our children here in The Bahamas? Likely not. The financiers and their politician friends have assured us of that. And, we call ourselves Christians. We the money changers and venerated merchants. Good thing most of us read at a third grade level.
You are correct. Darville is a shady politician. Words mean nothing to these people. Education is the answer to most of our social problems. But, if we had a moderately educated populace would we continue to put up with the likes of a Darville? Of course not. Our food sucks, just like our politicians. They go hand in hand.

They just listen to the empty words of our criminal politicians.
