To most Bahamians, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Orlando, and what they see on TV is the whole of the US.

A great way of saying that reality is not really upon us.
Anyone who remains optimistic is merely spouting ignorance.
Nobody knows how it will pan out.
Quit being an eternal salesman.
Some stuff will have no value in a few months.
Be prepared. Quit fooling yourself.

Bimini Rick,
The US health care system sucks. What don't you see in the complete failure?
Health care for profit, where a vast majority of people struggle just to pay health care costs.
Half of all bankruptcies are due to medical bills. Fighting with insurance companies just to get needed treatment? Yes, medical care in the US is "superior" for those who can afford it. The US spends way more than any other country in the world on healthcare and has less than stellar outcomes. The vast majority of Americans would prefer single payer universal health care, as polls show. Now, ask yourself why it can't happen. There should be no profit in healthcare. None. Abolish the insurance companies. They produce nothing of value for society.

Interesting. We want all the benefits of having these ships register in The Bahamas. But, not any of the responsibilities. Anything new here to see?

And what should we say when our boys on the fishing boats now in Nassau come back home to Andros in the next couple of days? Welcome home? Why are there rules if everyone believes they are exempt?

Porcupine says...

Health care now, more than ever, should be seen as a basic human right. The inability for anyone to access health care puts us all at risk, and exponentially inflates the true total health care costs, both public and private, as this pandemic clearly shows.. The private insurance game is rigged and does not produce any better health outcomes. Health insurance companies make their money denying people needed treatments and drugs. Who hasn't heard these heartbreaking stories? Get real, or get Christian if you like, and get profit out of health care. Let the insurance companies find a more honest line of work.
The comparison to Super Value is not correct. It would be if you had to pay for your groceries 5, maybe 10 years in advance. And then, the manager could tell you what you can and cannot get that week. Perhaps the good that will come out of this situation is a well needed reset. Back to basics maybe. Try going for a week without food. Now try going for a week without insurance. Apples and oranges. All of the private health insurance companies employees, the thousands of them, could actually help produce things of value for this country. The insurance industry merely takes money out of the real economy and shifts it, plus profits, into what, please tell me? I understand the value of having a service industry, however a disproportionate amount of money is changing hands without true value or a product being created. The global taxpayer has, and is, bailing out these massive companies that have been looted by their managers. We already have socialism. It is at work with every government bailout a company benefits from. Now we need that same type of thinking, that benefits the individual.

Porcupine says...

Agreed. And, yes to single payer universal health care. There is NO reason health care should be a for-profit enterprise. Wanna make money? Do real work and produce something.

Porcupine says...

Of course. Ignore what the experts are saying. So what that perhaps hundreds, maybe thousands will additionally die, due to the overloading of our hospitals. The Bahamas is lacking enough people who are truly educated. Even those who have done well in this country, seem unable to put the well being of us all before their own self interests. This is abundantly clear in our politics, our religion, our economy, the comments above. Idiots.

We are led to believe that the only brains in the world are in business.
There are times when business people should defer to those who are experts in a particular field.
Making statements such as, only extend it for 14 days, is utterly irresponsible, period.
We have been blinded, in one short generation, to believe that business is the pinnacle of human existence.
Perhaps this is a time when those with the most money will be unequivocally shown to be those who are most ill-equiped at anything other than personal enrichment and opportunism.
If we truly had political, religious or business "leaders", we would understand that the world we have gotten used to is one of dog eat dog, and is not conducive to true humanity, and certainly not aligned with the misguided Christianity that is practiced in the world today, The Bahamas no exception.
The problem is that we have all gotten used to it and cannot imagine a world without business leaders at the forefront of every challenge that pops its' head up.
The truly greatest minds are not in business.
