Do we really need to speculate? Surely you jest. How does a politician who never worked an honest day in their lives get rich? How do criminals and sociopaths continue to rise to the top? Hmm, not they they could be in bed with each other.
Hey Tal, there is as much truth and intelligence over there, as over here. Which is to say, as Carl Sagan said, "We have entered the age of ignorance." The average comments in our own national papers suggest we are still light years behind the US in education. Don't take it from me, just read birdie's comments and many others in this paper. Ourpopulation is virtually clueless. The US is clueless, while we are even more so. Any arguments there? People don't come to The Bahamas for higher learning, do they? And, what they call higher learning in the States is merely job training. Hence, 70+ million Americans voted for one of the most ignorant, vile people possible. And, we too, yes?
What Davis also failed to mention for good reason, is that the rampant government corruption, theft and incompetence is a very real factor in driving up consumer prices. We have made pay to play a significant barrier to entry for upstart businesses As well, the excessive spending which this administration excels at, all drive the cost of living up for those trying to make it on an average salary and honest work. Imagine if all of these crony contracts actually gave us value for the money. Imagine if these politicians actually worked for their salaries.
The call for the Bahamian government to adapt is rather ominous. The Bahamian government has failed at everything they say they are going to do. Bahamian businesses are already at a breaking point, due solely to the inability of the government to realize what keeps the economy going and how the government's revenue is generated. The bureaucracy and red red tape which permeates the entirety of our country will not fall overnight. This is a state of mind that will take a generation, at best, to rectify, if it is even possible with the existing mentality of our ruling class. Our government is composed of those who are specialized, none of which can see the bigger picture and how to relate the survival of our country to the fast changing world. Simply put, efficiency is not our game. Period. It is all about who you know, not what you know. This is the most significant penetration of our economy by the outside world yet. Presently, we have not cultivated the education, the mentality, nor the willingness to adapt. I would like to be more optimistic about this development, however, the inflated prices needed to maintain profitability are over, and the standard of living for much of this country is going to take a very hard hit. Anyone paying attention to the larger picture can see what is coming. Just like our national response to an imminent hurricane, we have waited until the last minute to prepare for this landfall.
It is the complete lack of a service attitude. That requires humility and a true desire to help. Having interviewed and hired thousands of people, I can usually tell in the first few minutes of an interview, if I would hire that person. To say, I could never hire most of those in governmental offices today.
