This is not a new problem. I recommended an overpass walkway to then minister Hanna Martin during a talk show and she completely blew the idea away with a frivolous excuse why they couldn't do it.
This is good for the environment but If they ban plastic bags, what would shanty town dwellers use to defecate in and what would be the alternative effect on the environment?
Where is the caution for students crossing the road? Some of these kids have a "knock me if you can attitude" and no respect for the motorist.
How stupid does a person have to be to get struck while using a pedestrian crossing? Had this student used the pedestrian crossing properly and waited for traffic to stop from both directions before casually wandering into the street, this accident couldn't have happened!
More than likely these people were the typical unqualified political appointees. If so, then they should be replaced with qualified individuals capable of enhancing operations **regardless of political affiliation.**
On another serious note, as a frequent interisland visitor, family Island airports leave much to be desired. Most that I have seen are inadequate, poorly maintained and a major embarrassment!
If funding is the issue, why not attach a small "service fee tax" to each passenger ticket towards the upkeep of family Island terminals.
A simple $2.00 fee per traveler would be painless, and go a long way in generating funding for the upkeep of buildings, bathrooms, landscaping etc.. Upgrading our tourism product starting with visitors first and last impressions cannot be overstressed!
Commercial banks have been downsizing for years while money transmission providers have become the fastest growing business in the Bahamas bar none!
Who are these foreigners transmitting this huge volume of cash out of the country on a daily?
Successive governments are 100% responsible for the demise of the Bahamian economy by not educating our people and allowing the domestic and construction sectors to be highjacked by Haitians, Jamaicans, Asians, and Latinos that repatriate income out of the local economy.
The Bahamas economy is now facing the death of a thousand lashes as the Bahamian workforce have been replaced by foreigners who do not patronize the local economy!

The fact is, the extraordinarily high number of expat blue collar work permit holders who repatriate income to home countries have seriously eroded commercial banks' local Bahamian customer base, resulting in lower bank business volumes!
Until the government stops this stupidity of displacing the Bahamian workforce with blue-collar work permit holders who repatriate majority of their income to home countries, the economy will unquestionably continue on this downward spiral and contraction.
**This is a simple-stupid, straightforward equation.** Either exercise government will and replace the huge number of foreigners holding work permits for blue collar jobs repatriating funds out of, and weakening the local economy that Bahamians qualify for **OR** continue with this stupidity and face a continuing dying economy resulting in more bank and local business closures and layoffs across the board.
PM Minnis better get this one right or he will face the same demise of Ingraham and Christie who thought they could get away with displacing the Bahamian workforce with foreigners and asking disenfranchised Bahamians to vote for them!

Anyone stupid enough to take over a failing enterprise without auditing the entire operation as a first step is stupid indeed!
"Public finances" is not the issue. Keeping capital circulating in the local economy versus flight of capital "out" of the economy is the question.
This is a very simple equation. When a Bahamian is paid on Friday, he is broke by the following Tuesday having spent all of his earnings locally stimulating various sectors of the economy. Compared to when a work permit holder is paid on Friday he repatriates large portions of his earnings to home countries stimulating foreign economies.
We cannot expect the Bahamian economy to "flourish" when spend is constantly eroded by repatriations!
