While i am no fan of Mr Gomez...he is correct that the information should be available. Even moreso the FOIA should have already been tabled in my opinion.

Well before the campaign season started, the FNM as a party should have already done a mark-up on the old FOIA that Ingraham's House passed but did not care enough to sign into law. It could have been edited, put before Cabinet and dealt with while KP was waiting on the FS to produce the missing money reports.

But, often the real world is more difficult than theory....and i hope we will have a real signed FOIA by Feb 28th at the latest.

Good points but we cant remove public service tenure until we have an elected Senate and such election is held 3 years after the House election. Otherwise the PM will have too much power.

The Public Service is effectively our real senate at this time.

Mr Turnquest i feel your pain in trying to explain new ideas to people who are stuck in the past.

If you tabled a Bill to allow manufacture of space orbiting communication satellites, you would have a riot from the Conch-Breakers Union.

KP is 100% correct here.

The article quotes the union guy as saying ...

"In a $1.7bn operation, you can't pay salaries? For the first time in history, our members have not been paid and today they won't be paid until after 5 today [Monday]," Mr Duncombe said. "This is unacceptable, we are not taking it and we are here to take a stand."

I agree with him that $1.7B is a lot of money - but is he also aware that our country is nearly $7.0B in debt? Do his members realize how close we are to currency devaluation? Do they realize how close we are to their $500 per week check being only "worth" $250? Are they aware of the legal prosecutions currently underway of persons in NIB who are suspected of fraud? Do they realize money "may" have gone missing and government is struggling to keep up with the bills?

TheMadHatter says...

Thank goodness we don't have to worry about the PLP coming back into office until Neverary 32nd.

The true concern behind the "worry" of those opposed to this Bill is the realization that the specific high paying industries listed are operated mainly by non-blacks - and we sure don't want any more of them here.

If this Bill was about allowing 5,000 Haitian "farmers" to come and plant and manufacture sugar from sugar cane in Andros, Mr. Ingraham would have been quieter than a mouse. He, more than many, is responsible for the pissing contest that has been going on between the government and the Port Authority over the last 25 years - each trying to insult and bring the other down at all costs - even at the expense of the livelihoods of the residents of Freeport - many of whom are currently sleeping in their cars. The resulting dip in deposits to the Treasury from Freeport is a significant part of the reason why we need V.A.T. to fill in the gap.

This thing is very simple. Either we allow in the businesses and people who can provide opportunity, training, and prosperity to our people - or we will continue to suffer from so-called "brain drain". College graduates remaining in whatever country they graduate college from. Didn't we just have an article a couple months ago about the loss of nurses across this nation because we cannot compete with the higher salaries and benefits offered to them in the USA and Canada? That is only one example.

Minnis is moving to make the Bahamas better, so we can keep our very intelligent and productive Bahamians here to be role models for our youth and to bring prosperity to all.

We recall that Pindling said something along the lines of "you either fish or cut bait". I guess that is the future Mr. Mitchell sees for our youth. Well, they got Android in their hands now, and they are no longer willing to accept that. That's why there are only 4 PLPs warming seats in the House.

The article says ....

Signatories include: Amnesty International; Caribbean Institute for Human Rights; Centre for Justice and International Law (CEJIL); Centro para la Observación Migratoria y el Desarrollo Social en el Caribe (Observation Centre for Migration and Social Development in the Caribbean, obmica); The Institute on Race, Equality, and Human Rights; Robert F Kennedy Human Rights; and the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA).

The IACHR requested the county adopt precautionary measures to “safeguard the lives and integrity of detainees held at Carmichael Detention Centre, including providing better hygienic conditions, medical treatment for detainees, reducing overcrowding, access to legal assistance, and allowing civil society organisations access to Carmichael to monitor conditions.”

Funny how these organizations are not now, nor have they ever stood up to have these same "rights" and "conditions" applied to Bahamian prisoners held at Her Majesty's Prison (or whatever they call it these days ... Dept. of Colon Erections?)

Also, in the respective countries where the main office of each of these organizations is based, how many of these "immigrants" with "rights" are those countries willing to take in?

Funny how they forgot to volunteer to do that. If each of those countries would take in 1,000 - that would really be a big help. Come on organizations. Why not step up to the plate in the name of "human rights" - ie. the right to have sex without protection and without consequences.

realfreethinker, porcupine, and vegy clearly see and understand the big picture here.

We are looking at better times ahead - more money in 2018.

Just when yall get those better high paying jobs - don't let the banks fool you into financial slavery by tying some balloons on cars and parking them in the middle of the mall.

Them balloons you will discover wind up being very expensive. Cheaper you get them from the party supply store.

StillWaters is correct on this one. We need something and we need something quick. We are either going to have a snowball effect going up or a snowball effect going down. Minnis is choosing up - and I think all Bahamians was to go up. This Bill will do that once signed into Law.

We need those areas of investment that the Bill is limited to and we need them last week. People got power turned off, water turned off, kids with hold in dey shoe. I don't know how many banks Ingraham wants to close.

This will chop down monopolies in this country (which is one of our true coffin nails) and open up things for people to see, witness, learn from, and get involved in. It's time to come out of the bush and into the 21st century. Thank you Dr. Minnis.
