Thank you Minnis & Johnson for holding firm on this. The figure of $50/month is correct. I heard of one who actually took home $9 (NINE) each month. That is insane.
Others commenting make good points too about pressure from family members / girlfriends etc. to lead one to bankruptcy - not to mention certain banks themselves along with fu******* plus and other "creditors".
Those blaming the individuals and talking about individual rights etc. have got to be joking. It is an insane argument to suggest that if someone makes $1200/month as a janitor for government, that they should be allowed to only get $300 in cash per month. What can you do with $300 per month under your own control? Nothing much.
Hope they continue to enforce the 75% threshold. Good stuff.
All the people who have been benefiting behind the scenes for decades will now be steadily popping out of the woodwork to "make noise", now that they see opportunities being fairly distributed to the average Bahamian.
The lady whose family has like ten store in Baha-Mar. The lady who has all those stores at Nassau airport and was so very behind on rent, the family who owns thousands of acres of "former" Crown Land in Andros, the family who controls all the oil and gas, the cases where when you find out so-and-so owns such-and-such business you later hear that he/she also owns this business and that business and that business AND that business. All of them. Those are the ones you are going to keep hearing noise from about the opportunities that this new Bill/Act is going to create for the average Bahamian and take the power and control out of their hands.
There is no reason for people "over-the-hill" to be living with old broke up car, washing machine, and busted TV lying on the side of the road, outside toilet, and the communities looking so shabby.
Things are changing. And the Royal families are worried about living in a country where everyone is doing well, and so therefore they will no longer be well-er-er than the rest.
BahamaPundit...you are correct about people not reading the Bill.
It is a good Act of law and everything Minnis said about it and our shrinking banking sector is correct. This law will help Bahamians more than a lot of their Pindling-programmed brains can comprehend.
However, there are other differences besides the dollar investment threshold. They can setup their physical enterprise before the clock starts ticking on their work permits. Also if approved by the investments board then immigration must come up with a reason to deny the work permit within 14 days or else it is effectively granted. This prevents immigration from "losing files" which is about the only thing they know how to do on Hawkins Hill besides give "papers" to Haitians (you know, the set with no photo what they is take to the copy machine and then you got 250 of them named Alphonse Pierre).
Our country is very very sick but Dr. Minnis ga stick one big needle in it boongie. It ga sting bad - but after a while the country will be healthy again. I hate a tetanus shot, but man it is much better than lockjaw.
Proudloudandfnm. I do not know...of course....but maybe you are not from freeport? I have for several years in both and grew up in fpo. For people from nassau i would equate the importance of that strip of road to be equal to Church Street in Nassau. For fpo people who visit nassau, Church St is the little short road you turn off Shirley St before the Anglican church to head to paradise island. It end when you hit the traffic light on Bay St. A very short road. YES Nassau coukd function without it. You could go dow a little further and cut through by commonwealrh bank and be on bay and then go to the bridge ir harbour bay or wheverever you were going.
Would that work? Yes.
Would it be a pain in the neck? Yes.
Is the Princess road a pain in the neck in fpo? Yes.
JohnDoe i agree that someone can make a LONG list of things that need to be done - and you just did a great job at it. However each day if a step forward on ONE item is made then after awhile a snowball effect will ensue and the gross picture of improvement will become clear to the layman.
People also need to bear in mind the auxiliary spending from businesses such as stationery, express mail packages, internet services, pizza delivery, staff parties, plaques & awards, repairs ti company vehicles, insurance, BEC, W&S, etc.. It's not just the salaries.
Socrates and Myers are correct. This is an awesome great Act. The Bahamas can become the center of so many new modern tech / finance enterprises if only we would allow it to.
Minnis is going to allow it to.
But i guess some of yall just like paying RBC $15 to cash ya paycheck.
The only reason i can imagine that Fred Smith is not in an insane asylum is that there exists none willing to accept him as a patient due to extremely poor prognosis.
This is a great Bill. Once again i am impressed. We need investment yesterday and we need a diversified economy with opportunities for Bahamians to learn and move up and that's what this Bill does.
I can tell you that in May of this year NOBODY and i mean nobody even Perry & Bran was more disappointed that the FNM won - but i am seeing action from them and not just words. Awesome stuff. Keep it up KP.
