Understandable that Mr. Hutton's Employer/business is Premier Imports which would be disadvantaged being Nassau based, with VAT and Duty taxed at the border. Not sure how the Government would deal with the VAT exemption aside a refund based on shipments verified as sent on to Abaco. However realize that government is notoriously Tardy when it comes to any refund, VAT or otherwise. Clear complete trailers into Nassau and send them forward full and complete to Abaco? It is crazy the way Government is approaching this though.
Airport and Hotel with RCL purchase go hand in hand. No rooms no airlift. No Airlift, no need for rooms. Unlike all other airports in the Bahamas the airlines and tourists themselves are not subsidized to fly here and come here. It is (or soon to be was) a private airport. Government ownership should mean typical subsidies should apply. Win Win Win.
So, how about all Nassuvians who experience power cuts frequently and at the most inopportune times simply zero their consumption? Those who can buy generators and supply themselves and a few neighbors (ala shanty town hookups) so as to Bankrupt BEC/BPL in short order would be a powerful statement for ending the a) service abuse b) cost abuse c) appliance abuse d) political control e) Union buggering over what is or has become an intrinsic right whether bills are paid or not. I mean, based on the 5 year political "power turn on scheme while bundling old power bill debts (ala housing crisis) and we promise to turn you on if you promise to pay the current bill and stay current" it must be rgognised as a basic human right. Personally i'd love a business model that allows me to fail consistently and reliably without any onus to improve and with endless access to customer money. We need a national wall of shame. Opposite the Bahamian in sports wall of fame of course. Perhaps our national awards or medals would then be worth achieving.
Just another example of Government mismanagement and "Culture" coming home to roost. There will always be those who abuse a given system, and those you prosecute if found to be unlawful. Did not Minnis refer to Hoarding as being a crime? Not a hard call in the case of Generators stacked up, harder to define if talking about food or water. Not hard to define as wrong if one is caught selling NGO free food. Perhaps write your P.M. a memo.
No one is criticizing the students. They are victims of a failed educational system that seems beyond repair. How many years of graduating kids must we fail? There is also no doubt that parents are failing their children, and no state can replace good firm parenting. Until the root causes of societal dysfunction including education are recognized no patch job or ministerial personality can fix much of anything.
Wow. Just Wow. I wonder though, if the people grading these exams are themselves products of the "D" average system he seems to think acceptable. failure.
For once a sensible idea, spoken about decades ago but non the less better than them sitting and rotting. However, can this be administered without political flavor, in a fair and appropriate manner? After all, this is our usual procedural failure. Perhaps a vetted list of currently licensed but "boatless" fishermen would be compiled, those who lost boats due to Dorian, with all names going into various hats based on available boat sizing or class. Draw names to assign boats until all serviceable boats are gone. But that would be too easy. Maybe Tal is right.
I just wonder where we would be without the single use plastics, bottles for drinking water and bags of all description for clean up and relief food distribution and food toting in the aftermath of Dorian. All imported. Perhaps next time we could roll it all up in Banana leaves. Of course there is climate change. The planet is a revolving evolving sphere which is ever changing and subject to its position in relation to the sun moon and stars. We aught to be better stewards of our world, but we are often pathetic stewards of our individual selves.
