The most worrisome part of this, is that somehow Government thinks it knows better than everyone else, and can do it all better than anyone else. Nothing could be further from the truth. Look at Houston, Private sector efforts, as in Joaquin also mobilize faster and more effectively. Always will. clogging up efforts with government mini-me and micro management does more aftermath damage than anything else. Still, we should be thankful for the donations of the U.S. Government. Pray they are used openly and fairly.
Typical authority under rule of law converted to personal power through ignorance. Those in power have us believing they can do whatever they want, and we can do only what they allow. Completely Bass Ackwards. So stupid they do not even understand the degree they undermine the legitimacy of the offices they hold.
The schools are simply a reflection of out society, just as in any other country. Don't like that thought? then your argument would be with the truth. Our school system was designed by the British, staffed with the British, and largely run by the Anglicans, Methodists and Catholics. Then the Government got into the game, changed the game, and yes, extradited the expat teachers. One of many I know of, was given 2 weeks to leave. Was Head of a primary school. She did fine back in England, became a principal. But loved it here. Put 30 years in here, teaching Pindlings, Sweeneys, Gibsons Hannas, all the names of self determination, independence etc etc. Look at those Government high produced back in the 50's, 60's, and even the early 70's. The ones that amaze me though, are the occasional bright sparks, articulate, inquisitive, unstoppable individuals I get to meet. Sure, we lose many to overseas education and industry, the thousands who never came back. But some stay, and defied the system. And what do we do with them? Show them a system of patronage, connection, fraud and avarice. We thwart them at every turn, sap them of that spark, God forbid we should allow them to thrive! The Bahamas has failed itself from the core promise and premise. And yet we worship the names of those who delivered this woeful state of affairs. Intentional or not, it is the result we must live with, and get serious about changing. But that means changing us.
Funny as all Banker, Not to fill Larry's shoes but certainly pick up where he has left off, R.I.P. Larry. Micro management has killed this country, politically, (silent consent) functionally (civil service self preservation, conversion of authority to personal power) economically (sit on the pile of money, take no risk) Mental stagnation also has deep roots. Nothing will change, but everything will decay. Even the politicians who have "acquired wealth" via "public service" sit on the millions, following the practice well established. No imagination, over regulation. Pathetic and difficult to break.
How does inspecting ships that come to port Pressure Hutchinson? Hamper port operations and the container traffic will get diverted to Mariel. The cruise ships will go away..... As to profitable operations, globally, their net is greater than our National debt! The fly threatens to bite the Elephants a**........
The illusion of corruption is sometimes as powerful as actual corruption, but your party affiliation speaks volumes. Sad but true, especially in light of the "hiring agency" supposedly run from your constituency office or ministerial office. If there is smoke, the fire should be investigated. Simple enough, I await the outcome.
Sure as hell no benefit to the members from it! ($$ dues) Audits! Annual Audits. Just as civil servants will be held accountable, unions which "serve" their membership, and affect the public at large should be held just as accountable! Action and consequence!
The Governments job is not to "add Employment" other than by facilitating the private sector. The Private sector creates wealth, Governments re-allocate wealth. The PLP philosophy of job handouts and political loyalty can only create a fiefdom, which will degenerate into a dictatorship. Rule by personality, rule by favor. The Civil service is but a burden, but in some regards a necessary and lawful one. Defense from without, protection within, the courts for dispute resolution, Governance. All else is overblown, inefficient, wasteful and justifies further taxation. I cannot believe you are an idiot, therefore, must assume you have designs on a fiefdom.
