Port ownership has let licensees take the brunt of these Government attacks and its attempts to undermine The H.C.A. The fire is getting closer to home now....... They better wake up or they will find they no longer exist, as if Licensees are going to face two sets of fees be they licensing or maintenance and others, only one set will get paid.
So it looks as if the Government (URCA) will take another run at the Port Authority and Grand Bahama Power Co. (Emera) to be the regulator, displacing the Grand Bahama Port Authority. One court Battle has already ruled against URCA in Regulating the Cable Company within Freeport. Interestingly enough URCA does have default jurisdiction to the East and West of Freeport, outside of the Port Authority area for both Cable and Power but both are supplied from Freeport licensed and based facilities. Perhaps the current rate negotiations will be short lived? Or put on hold as any "agreement" between Port Authority and Emera might end up null and void. Looks like the License fees and Kwh sold rider/cut paid to the Port would also be diverted to URCA for the alternate licensing. This could get messy.
These visiting "experts" are from first world jurisdictions where the systems have been in place for centuries and are fairly well preserved. We had those systems too, but have dismantled and conflicted them beyond recognition or function. By the way, "Swift Justice" is not what we want, we want efficiency in our court system for the application of justice, plain and simple. Swift equals a hatchet job here.
The current Government along with all those prior have set the pace and led by example. What they have started at the top long ago has inevitably trickled down and destroyed society. The only way to reverse the corruption and apathy is from the top, with Enforcement! Leading by example and certainly not by any of the current crop of politicians as leopards do not change their spots. The issue is there are very few left in society that live beyond reproach and are not scamming at every turn, and of those, very few would "jump into the septic tank" to fix it. So the situation will get worse, much worse, and the conversation will not change, and it will be a hot button election topic of false promises. Start removing nuts and bolts, small parts from a car engine and sooner or later it will fall apart and no longer work. We have dismantled all of the standards and rules of civilized society over the last 47 years, and we expected something different?
The worse things get, the more they will screw it up. If the belief is that the private sector has wealth, they will promise it to everyone and fritter it away via targeted taxation. Discourage your working investing sector and they will walk away, leaving everyone with nothing. The politicians will follow them with the last of what can be stolen from the treasury for themselves.
What the citizens of the Bahamas need to wake up and realize is that without their private sector efforts, investments, work and profitability, the Government has nothing. Not a dime with which to pay civil servants with, never mind all these Freebies they keep promising to everyone! The real problem is the lack of cohesive combined effort in the private sector to fight back against the fools and idiots who couldn't make a dime out of fifty cents! Which is why they steal and scheme to profit for themselves. Think about it, the Government collects, giving them one collection point to steal from! Until the entire Private sector lends its support and presence to counter foolhardy government efforts and initiatives, the only thing changing is the business environment, and for the worse. This is nothing new, it has been going on for decades, and getting worse and worse. It is your Dollar that will get devalued, your standard of living flushed down the toilet. Those who have stolen their way to the top on your back hold U.S. currency in foreign lands! They will walk away and reminisce "about the good old days"
In observing this latest "special interest fiasco" it seems that Mr. Prescott Smith, a supposed die hard PLP General in Andros is pulling a typical PLP lobbying effort on his own behalf. It is precisely this sort of garbage which is strangling the Bahamian economy. An online Permit for fly fishing is sufficient for foreign anglers, payable directly to the Ministry of Finance, or at time of foreign vessel entry or personal entry. A competitive market for guides and lodges is a good thing left the hell alone. To risk current income or industry for one apparent jackass (and his minions) is ludicrous! Is his product/lodge that bad?
Enact that crap and many many Companies will fire all employees overnight, and re-hire them as needed as subcontractors. The above only proves that the more any government tries to "run things" the less there is to run.
Positive crap! Wait for the international fallout, not that the politicians care, they've already stolen their loot from the treasury and now Sarkis. Shameless thieves.
