Yep, it will happen, irrespective of the rhetoric fed to us by the politicians,
irrespective of private sector complaint, all a dollar short and day late.
Honesty is not their strong suit, nor can they go against what they have gone along with for decades.
VAT was simply the first tax enacted to replace revenue lost from the requirement to lower duty rates. (WTO)
Fed to us under the guise of paying down the National Debt. (IMF)
structured by the IMF.
Personally I see Income tax right after real property tax across the board,
by 2018 at the latest.
Anyone who has read what ever can be found on the subject would have to agree.
read despite our successive administrations best efforts to conceal our position from us.

"It is unclear how many in the private sector, and wider Bahamian society, have been paying attention to this, given that Value-Added Tax (VAT) and possibly now National Health Insurance (NHI), have dominated the policy agenda"
Most Bahamians do not think their world will ever change, either by local conditions or external. They are in for a nasty wake up.
All of the legislation passed since at least 2003 has been driven by the compliance requirements of the oecd, wto, imf, eu_epa carib-can, and all the lesser international bureaucracies we have made ourselves beholden to since independence.
Non discriminatory treatment of the Nationals of all signatory countries is one of the most basic tenets of these agreements we have signed!
The signing of these agreements by successive Government administrations has been driven by political self preservation, not in the best interests of the Bahamian people.
Our successive administrations have not prepared nor involved Bahamians in the processes or principals of these agreements.
But we will have to live with them.
BTW, Well_Muddo, while you may be right on the Homestead exemptions, they also have income tax and overall tax accountability.
Are you comfortable with the potential for our Government to come and seize your assets under VAT and future legislation?
They have given themselves that power.
How long before they use it?

The_Oracle says...

Do not forget that Pindling addressed the U.N. as part of his strategy to bring to light discriminatory policies and persecution in the Bahamas back in the late 60's.
This emerging nationalism and laughable indignation is worrisome in that it is an escape for most from the reality of this country, the injustice, lack of justice, political persecution and corruption.
Truth be known most politicians could be brought up on charges of treason.

Because the overnight "washing" of the money doesn't work.
To create a Gaming industry from scratch is one thing, legislation, level playing field
and same starting line,
but that is not what we have.
We have pre-existing millions, if not billions, the proceeds of illegal activity.
Is there not legislation for the confiscation of the proceeds and assets from drug dealing?
Not that the Government ever moved on that with any moral impetus,
save the occasional boat or vehicle.
And when BOB is flush with cash, Will it become the pariah of the Banking world?
And its shareholders?
True to form, they never think these things through.
The Numbers industry has created a cash economy that the drug industry must envy,
and that the Government fears.

Poor Fred, wants so badly to be taken seriously, but with the antics of all the rest of them he is perpetually overshadowed!
Good list ThisIsOurs, covers the who is who of Bahamian politics!

The_Oracle says...

I love how we tear down anyone who suggests things can be better or should be changed!
Gad Damn Cannibals. We eat our youth, shoot any head sticking up above the short grass,
Idolize corrupt politicians and drug dealers, virtually panic if anything does change for better or worse.
The Government cannot even run a road traffic dept! Do we love attending funerals so much we are willing to let the government provide more of them?
Generally speaking, Nassau is a cesspit, so IF Superwash is one, it would fit right in.
If it is not, it soon will be given the way we treat buildings and property.
Government running healthcare is like numbers houses running banks.
Every body grinning from ear to ear as the country goes to shyte.

Still a rip off @ 33 cents/Kwh esp. while burning duty free (bonded) fuel!
While Natural Gas has potential who do you think will pay for the infrastructure?
The customers!
Just like paying for the new plant.
GB power is a profit center, with an incompetent Regulator.
The power is erratic, destroys motors, the phase angle is whacked,
Remember the rate structure change? GBPA let them put the whole fuel cost into the surcharge, and shifted their % (cut) from fuel oil burned to Kwh produced.
What you're saying is in effect a rotten apple is better than a rotten Banana.
Meanwhile neither port nor Emera want to allow private Alternate energy, irrespective of the national energy policy.

The_Oracle says...

Emera is no savior, while the fuel surcharge does fluctuate the base rate is still high.
Being guaranteed a minimum 10% return on investment by the so called regulator (GBPA) does not help, and providing the dirtiest power in the region, destroying equipment on a regular basis.

The_Oracle says...

It has taken over 40 years of incompetence, political meddling, slush funding, union saturation,
kickbacks, payoffs, to create this situation.
You want it fixed now?
you couldn't have arrived at at this disaster any faster had you planned to!
Neither do you make consistently wrong decisions for over 40 years without
facing a very high price!

Already in the "general account" no doubt,
with requests for waste submitted!
The National Debt will see not one dime,
meaning the pressure will still be on from the IMF et al.
So, along comes another tax to take care of the National debt.
They are so predictable.
