A politician or civil servant can do only that which the law allows, A private citizen can do anything save that which the law prohibits. A point not understood by Mr. Bannister, obviously. none of then have any power! They Have Authorities as delineated by the rule of law! full stop! That they exercise extraneous "Powers" is why the Country in the mess it is in. Their Authority has to have limits, or you end up with PIndlings, Hubbigities and Minnis's Micro Managing every aspect of Civil life and opportunity. (note, there isn't any) Civil servants have no power to Deny anything, but simpley to ask for the provision of what the law requires be submitted for a rubber stamp approval. However, it is the people who are at fault, thereby allowing a constant stream of malfeasant imbeciles to be elected. This whole "permission denied" or "stalling" is garbage created by those who would rule, not govern! I say the above to say this: we were not capable of self determination and Independence then nor are we now.
Minnis and D'agular are desperate and will sell anyhting and anyone to "appear" to be doing something, no matter how foolhardy and idiotic it is. Spanish wells may tolerate that ship for one day, but I'd be willing to bet if they don't like it, it will stop in short order, PM and D'Agular be damned.
No need to Bully the Government, they will roll over and play dead upon demand. This push for global 15% tax on Corp is aimed at the big boys, Google, Amazon, Apple, etc, but is going to threaten the viability of some local companies, make no mistake. Until the Bahamas has like type tax structures, and signs onto tax treaties with the G-7's, it is gonna hurt. No tax treaty, no tax reciprocity. We are 20 years behind on this.
Most often, those in power who fight tenaciously for their position, are wrong in their position. Foolish pride, but also unfettered abuse of authority, converted to personal power, blinds them to the horrors they create for individual people of all nationalities. Were it a Bahamian incarcerated without due process of law in the U.S., Europe, Canada, it would be headline news here, with all the nationalistic xenophobic vitriol thrown in to play, and by the very political players who ignore it when it happens in your own back yard, and by their own hands. Both political parties would be wise to note, there can be no national pride, without the balance of shame, of which we bear much in this situation. Governments are not elected to destroy lives, they are elected to serve the entire public. Not just their favored few of either political stripe.
Pathetic last minute/last ditch effort from those with very limited capabilities and vision. Airport need to happen quickly. The government purchase unto itself is meaningless. The hotel deal is no doubt dead. How can it take months if not more than a year to get anything Resolved?(pardon the pun) Taking the Rand 4 story is a joke, unless it includes 4 story parking as well. The VAT credit won't do much, it is a pittance of an initiative to hire more people in a dead economy. People get hired when businesses need more people. Overall perhaps we should be glad they're not doing much. Whatever they usually do is wrong!
The people of Spanish Wells can solve this stupidity in short order: Close up shop, lock stock and barrel, close the whole town down for the day. Will only have to happen once. Declare a community public holiday.
Depriving them of shelter over their heads Code compliant or not, and not providing any decent housing alternative is a disgrace at a humanitarian level and beyond. The lack of code enforcement is only equalled by the lack of enforcement of any of the laws of the land, so therefore this reeks of selective enforcement. By other words, persecution, discrimination, Victimization, pick one. It all stinks.
There will be no tax treaty until we have Like for like taxation (income, capital gains etc) No tax treaty, no reciprocity. (shared taxation to the higher rate) This has been coming since 2004, but as usual we are decades behind. We are not a no tax Business platform in that business license fees are based on a % of gross. I would think the 15% would be based on net. This is a direct challenge to the viability of many businesses, not just financial services.
As always, follow the money. Globally a new industry has been created. Whether intentional or not, it is a real money maker globally and locally that is here to stay.
