But Look at the bright side! look at all the money we are not paying out to subsidize tourists to come here! Look at all the refunds of departure taxes and arrival taxes and dockage etc etc we aren't paying out to cruise lines and airlines! We must be saving a fortune! Anyone else see the irony in this?
Better remind a few of your senior political party members/ministry officials about parties during lockdown. As the Old Kansas song says, "Can I get get a Witness" Popo doesn't have the guts to charge them but hey, facts is facts.
You have only one hope for the return of tourism, And that is the will and want of people to travel internationally and go on vacation. Particularly visit the Bahamas. Now, if it were me, I'd be wanting to know the rates of infection in any country i'm going to visit, and maybe even the mortality rate but more importantly the capability to get treated properly by the local health care system. On the last two counts we fail. Perhaps this highlights a prior national faiiure, that of the failure to adopt Medical tourism. The failure to be integrated with and into the U.S. Florida Health care system. Lord know our people are, both as patients and in professional capacities in that system.
A "Mental Shock" sounds like it could be beneficial as therapy for stupidity. Flash back? Was the Generator remembering the last blackout and had an emotional break down? Anyway, glad no one was hurt, but it is the kind of thing that happens when your equipment is not maintained, is overloaded and patched together like grannies quilt.
And here we have the Minister of Tourism telegraphing the Cruise industry that we are so desperate we will concede anything, do everything, to keep them coming. You are talking about "not Allowing" when you have absolutely no authority to keep them coming. You have the authority to stop them coming, but not mandate they arrive! Where do we find these people..........
But do you really want to risk taking a single case into Abaco, where supposedly there is no Covid-19?They have almost zero Medical capability there, aside various resident DR's who happen to be stuck there. Returning people to Nassau, perhaps even Grand Bahama is one thing, but as evidenced by the last round of flights, "protocols" (I love that word) were breached in more than two regards: 1) A person testing positive was advised not to travel and did, 2) was not on the Manifest and flew, 3) was somehow tied into 3 other passengers as yet un-described, The Consul decided a free flight was too good to pass up, 4 silence and no resignation from the "Competent Authority" 5) the ominous sound of quiet sweeping. (as in under Rugs lifted)
Borrowing US funds to shore up a lack of foreign reserves with no replenishment in sight and now way to repay aside with banana leaves is by definition, suicide. Understand, tourism is a cash crop. U.S. cash. They bring it and spend it. You need another U.S. cash crop to replace it with. An export. be it a service or tangible.
I saw something, looked official, saying the Man not on the flight Manifest, that tested positive, has now tested negative, not once but twice? Are we supposed to believe that? And how did one turn into 4? Like was he in one of their duffle bags? and how does one not be on the manifest if you are not in a duffle bag?? And what is with the Miami Consular gal, deciding she wanted to be home for Mothers day? So she just jumps on the flight? Abandons her post? She sure threw her Miami co-worker under the bus with haste. Think we will ever know the truth?
The spirit of the act may be dead, but the potential is greater than ever, which is what scares the political class of Nassau. always has, always will. But Freeport is an island of the Bahamas with many Bahamians having made their lives there and deserve more than the 50 years of contempt they've received, from both PLP and FNM administrations alike. The travesty is the lost potential for the country.
There was certainly a sudden and overshooting response to this Virus, and completely understandable given how little was known about it, and how poorly prepared our public health services were and still are. (and forever will be) However, economic suicide (or murder, as it is a Government created shutdown) will certainly be as painful, if not more so if this monkeying around with the economy continues. We seem stuck in COVID-Mode. No one else in the world is. All things in measure and moderation. The Flu is still out there killing people. Every single year. Car accidents. Heart Failure. Any number of other causes, including Murder. At this point, social distancing and hand washing, sanitizing and disinfecting is all you can do. Time to get off the God complex " we can win/we can beat/we can battle" BS and get with the big picture here. Inaction is an action, to do nothing.
