While there are bad apples and opportunists in the private sector, they by no means have a exclusivity on it. Foreign payables is a businesses largest overhead if it is an importer. Government is the second largest revenue earner via taxes. Staff payroll is third largest. Power Co is 4th. If you don't pay your vendors, local and foreign, you are finished. You have to pay government its taxes, unless you are politically exempted. Staff don't work for free. zero income means no cash flow. None of these "layoffs " are supposed to be permanent. Smithfield Farms is Chinese owned. Plants are typically disassembled and shipped to China to be used for processing there. So the raw U.S. food is shipped to China for processing and shipped back to the U.S. for consumption. You really want to be eating Smithfield products? Google them.
The Prime Minister did himself a great discredit with his off script "rant" questioning peoples Hearts and whether they have one or not. Abaco and G.B. could well question where his is, with respect of Government Dorian response. The Governments of this country have consistently set themselves up as the "great Provider" to the Bahamian people, perhaps the lesson here is the largess of that lie. Thank God for foreign NGO response and continued efforts. Businesses will be needed to restart your economy, try doing that without them. With no income they are hemorrhaging ( a word you may be familiar with?) Foreign payables, payroll, utilities, and restoration costs in the case of Abaco and G.B. none of which stopped. No, an apology is owed to the Bahamian people on that count. I don't know which "rich merchant" you went south on (maybe all?) but a national address was not the place for it. Your anger was on display, and was misdirected. If no apology then it should be added to the transcript of your speech. Let the record show what you said. Meanwhile, Grand Bahama would like a clarification on its status as an out island as per a previous order (the food store fiasco a-z names/days) or as Nassau. (store opening days) The interpretations are left right and center at this point.
No worries, Fred will be along tomorrow for the anti foreign "Sovereign" speech. I do agree with shutting down all numbers shops and creating a national lottery, Which is what should have been done by the PLP instead of legitimizing an illicit underground Criminal enterprise which preys on the least able to afford it. Now would be a good time to seize their bank accounts and spend it on a staple foods food bank for the poor and unemployed. use their database of customers to distribute the proceeds.
I like the idea of a large scale lease to the U.S. Govt, however it will give the likes of Fred Mitchel a stroke, as messing up our Sovereignty is purely his domain! Actually both parties have buggered that up but the current opposition does claim some divine exclusivity to it. In conjunction with a large scale southern land and sea bed lease I'd say U.S. dollar-ize our economy. We don't have but a subsistence economy in any case, far too small to support our own dollar. The above could get the U.S. banks in here competing with the Canadians. They've had a good run at pillaging our economy.

How Ironic, the Government, which few trust, (Across administrations) trying to invoke a sense of National sacrifice/service. To be sure, this is a national crisis which could become a catastrophe, and the Dr's all have valid points. The Problem is, the Dr's know better than most how well the Government can cope and "provide" healthcare to the public at large.
