The letter last week said they were closing *the courier arm* of their business. They didnt say the entire business was closing. It would stretch belief though that courier revenue stream that employs people to clear packages, transport packages, sort packages etc could close down entirely but not impact staff. The helter skelter response from Finance says they realize that too.
"*Tribune Business sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, last week said Blue Postal executives were called in to a meeting by Ministry of Finance officials who, alarmed at reports the company was ceasing operations, feared it would close down without settling due tax liabilities to the Government.*
Again, Brave Davis needs to take control of the Ministry of Finance. How many times is it now, that someone has made these dramatic strongman policy changes only to have to reverse everything when the negative economic impact, clear to everyone else, becomes apparent to them.
There is another way to do this. They did it with Omni. They spoke to them then reported that this asset and that asset had been collected and there was agreement for future remediation.
"*ensure the economic benefit stays in The Bahamas for generations to come”.*

"* It did, though, promise to provide details on the project’s projected economic and environmental impact “in the coming weeks”*
How many years they been fighting with Toby and they just doing an environmental impact study as an afterthought? The administration walking into this with eyes open. Does someone still get a percentage finders fee on these projects? But the good news they havent sponsored a junkanoo group as yet
When I hear initiatives that attempt to force people into use of technology like making it impossible to conduct a transaction without using their app, it's the perfect signal that the people behind them dont understand how systems work. 70% of the "innovation" in this country is conducted in that way. Imagine Henry Ford going on a campaign to kill all horses and forcing people to drive this new thing he called an automobile. It explains the low Sand dollar adoption rate, it's a wonder they havent tried to force payment of VAT and candy to only Sand Dollar as yet. I remember the FS saying of ClickToClear *they just have to change the way they do things to how the system works*. Now we're forced to use Exempt app, God forbid your phone dies
The company "*agreed*" to pay a fine? And the amount is a "*secret*"? Is it $1?
"*How our legislation is drafted … our legislation restricts our ability to issue what is called spot fines (which is) fines on the spot.*"
2 years in we just noticed? After going around the world begging for the world to save us from environmental damage? After launching a carbon credits initiative for people to invest billions on our as ability to protect our seabed?
The solution has to be in stopping this buildup in the first place. Playing gatcha is benefitting nobody.
They have all the data on these businesses, they should be able to estimate a "*VAT bond*" to start the business then after 6 months of operation they should have an idea of the volumes being handled and adjust. If a business isnt able to pay the bond they should never be able to enter this type of business. Separate VAT account and the remittance interval for these businesses should be monthly, reduce/discourage the buildup. The audited statement submission can continue on a quarterly basis.
Usually when you move to new systems, the current work gets scanned/input in as part of the new process, the historical work needs the remediation effort (speaking specifically of work maintained on hard copies). Its unclear if he's saying no info on any contracts is available or just the old contracts pre 2022. They should at minimum be able to automatically spit out a report of all contracts awarded since the system was implemented with a single click of a button, otherwise why spend thousands (hundreds of thousands?) on a crappy system with no reporting capability?
So if you owe 6 million to one agency under the Mjnistry of Finance they will let you slide but if you owe 100 thousand to another they stop your business from operating? Ok, I get it.
"*something you constantly posted about. Reviews of business licence filings, vat returns and internal operations.*"
I do not "*constantly*" post about harassing people into compliance. I say we're overtaxed, I ask for orderly processes and innovation. I say charging business license on gross revenue is a nail in the coffin of this economy.
They allowed the 6 million delinquent to remediate over time, I found it weird that they allowed a backup of 6million in collections but they did. It cant just be Minnis, this is 2023.
